USAF: F-15s risk catastrophic design weakness
By Stephen Trimble

The US Air Force Boeing F15A-D Eagle fleet is grounded after preliminary findings of a crash investigation show signs of a design weakness.

Air Combat Command (ACC) ordered the stand-down until the airframes can be inspected. An inspection checklist is being prepared by the Warner-Robins Air Logistics Center, an ACC spokesman says.

An ongoing investigation of a 2 November crash is focusing on potential failure of the F-15抯 upper longerons near the canopy seal.

Recent inspections found cracks in this same area on two other F-15Cs. A Boeing simulation analysis shows such cracks could lead to 揷atastrophic failure

Betoi...kebanyakan versi A-D dah lebih 20 tahun

Tip...nak agak umur pesawat AS (lebih kurang) tengok serial number dia...dua digit pertama tunjukkan tahun kewangan pesawat tersebut ditempah..so plus minus 2 tahun gitu la...

The Americans must have forgotten about structural upgrades in their Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) programme. Some of those planes are over 30 years old. Not surprising to find out about all these cracks.

The F15 have been operating extensively for decades. These cracks are due to fatigue, not basic design flaws. The Americans are just being very cautious over the matter. The question is therefore the operational longevity of the aircraft more than anything else.

Too bad they have to sacrifice some F-22s to pay for all that structural upgrading that should have been done years ago.

The ones that are operational do not have frames that are 30 years old.

Hey most of the B-52s in service today are even older than the pilots that fly them. Some of them are over 40-50 years old and still going strong. And yes most of the F-15A/B/C/D planes in question are between 20-30 years old. The F-15Es don't have the problem because they already had extensive structural upgrades during construction.

Yeah and at least one of the current pilots is the son of a former BUFF driver!

Amazing that that plane will remain in front line service for at least ten more years.

Air guard tend to get older jets but I cannot understand how a 74 build plane can still be allowed to operate.
