Changing your last name or hyphenating or keeping it?

I don't know if there's another thread that's similar but I'd just thought I'd ask. Untuk sesaper yg dah kahwin, do you guys keep your last name ke atau hyphen -kan ke or change to your husband's last name? I was thinking of keeping my last name (yela our last name kan our father's name, rasa sayang pulak nak tukar) and add my husband last name, but that would be a total of 4 names! Panjang pulak. And what about the process? Leceh tak? Macam mana dengan our Malaysia passport and Id (Ic)? Let me know how you made your choice... I'm debating mine

For me, passport, MyKad and other M'sian documents masih guna my father's name. It also very difficult to change your name in Malaysia. So just keep it.

But for documentation at oversea and married, use your husband's last name. Kat US nih....binti or bin jadi middle name (tak tau apasal). Lagi satu kat US kalau you tak guna your hubby's last name, penat nak explain kat orang especially if you said you're married. First sekali kat Immigration (masa nak buat permanent resident card), masa kat bank or anywhere lah.

My friend sorang still keep her father's name kat US even lepas kawin, pening gak kepala asyik nak explain kat orang.

I masih pakai my own name. Awal2 dah bagi tau ngan laki I yg I tak kan tukar nama I. Skrg ni pun masih nama sendiri. Cuma kadang2 org panggil I mrs. A. Officially I am still what I am.

Kat sini pun macam US jugak, everything official, I guna hb family name. My malaysian passport tak tukar apa pun. Resident Card, guna married name and maiden name too. Bank memang guna married name. Orang peranchis tak reti nak sebut nama bapak, dari Mohd, jadi Mod..hancus betul

Cali you dok France ek? Bestnya...kalau kita tersesat kat sana boleh ler you bawak round-round. Okay tell me about what do you think of French ppl? Probably since you dok sana you boleh citer. I always want to go to France, but mostly men don't like it, but women does.

Hiro, at the moment I ikut my hb ke Doha so dah lama tak tinggal kat sana. I dulu tinggal 8 tahun kat sana. Tak tau bila nak balik sana for good. French ppl ni sama je macam orang kat merata dunia. If you nice to them, they will be nice to you. Parisian people are quite cold, but once you know them, they are nice.  I tinggal kat suburb so tak kenal real parisian.

Perempuan memang harus suka ke sana sebab shopping heaven kan. Tapi kalau you suka arts/museums semua tu then you should come here. You can even follow the Da Vincci trail (something like that).

Next time kalau i dah balik sana kalau nak tersesat silalah....

Betul la. Dah dekat baper org tanya I bila nak tukar my last name (sebab I baru kahwin). Pastu I tak der masa lagi nak tukar semua document tu, tu yg tak tau kat mana nak start. So takper la yer, passport Malaysia lain dengan nama kat US nie? Sebab I tak start buat paper work lagi. That's good to know.Thanks you all.. oh kalau tersesat kat New Jersey, dtgla melawat I...

Tak tukar pun. Masa balik dari Malaysia kastam LAX tanya kenapa nama kami tak sama -- ku ckp jer saja tak nak tukar.

Don't worry about your passport. Keep it that way, thats the proof of you as M'sian citizen. Any M'sian ID keep that way. Senang aje, paling senang, pi register wedding you kat NJ Court House and terus letak nama last name yang you pilih. Depa tak tanya anything since they know you guys married. Then masa process permanenet resident application, guna nama yang dalam marriage certificate tu. Tak susah. Once dapat temporary PR (you datang US guna visitor visa atau fiancee visa?)..both have different kind of application. Kalau guna visitor visa don't go out from US until you granted temporary resident (tak lama, about 6 months). Otherwise depa not not allow you to come back to US until you have spousal visa from Malaysia.

Memang susah nak adapt dengan nama father you kena tukar dengan hubby. But that's only in US not in Malaysia. Tapi lama2 you can accept it especially when ppl call you "Mrs...(your hubby's last name).

Tak silap I NJ guna same regional office masa I duduk MD for PR processing (Vermont).

Hang dok New Jersey ka, I pi sana sekali masa my classmate datang US jumpa hubby dia now ni. Kat situ ler hubby dia proposed. Now ni dah ada anak sorang.

I tak tukar nama kat any existing documents sebelum pindah aussie.

But bila pindah sini any new docs semuanya guna surname my husband for official purposes. Joint accounts, Trust account, business account, legal docs, credit cards etc tu penting for me to use my hb punya surname. Lagi memudahkan. Jadi dia orang tak banyak soal. Lagi pulak I bekerja kat sini. So banyak official docs yg invovled.

Kalau I live in Malaysia, I can never be bothered about using hb surname etc.

Malaysian punya official documents memang I tak tukar, only french official docs (marriage cert, bank & resident card etc) je guna hb surname. Tak kuasa nak menukar segalanya

As Cali said, M'sian documents tak payah tukar. Actually kat oversea you all memang tak guna langsung those documents except passport for proof of M'sian citizenship bila balik Malaysia.

As for bercerai-berai, kat US really easy to change, so tak ada masalah. Lagi pun bila cerai sure balik Malaysia so nama hubby bukan pun guna kat Malaysia. There will be no problem. Infact kat US ni senang giler tukar last name macam tukar baju jek.

But actually this is all up to individual. Yang mana selesa and up to your kehendak. For me it is more dari segi 'legal matters at oversea dari segi properties and accounts'. Your sirname at oversea have no impact with your name in Malaysia.

ada la org kat sini, duduk dekat umah.  belakikan orang putih Aussie... tp bermastautin kat sinilah (tak balik negeri laki dia..) terhegeh2 pegi tukor habis without hyphenating whatsoever..contoh.. nama betul:  joejambulbengong AK. SUNTAI so dia tuko jadik joejambulbengong SMITH, ada kawan cadangkan.... you're asian, Iban pulak tu..why not u put, joejambulbengong SUNTAI-SMITH.  yelah , hormat sikit kt asal usul dia, sian parents dia yang mula2 tak approved dia kawen tp finally sbb sayang kan anak, derang restu lah jugak. kalo dia tuko nama tu lepas 6 bulan kawen takpe jugak.. ni cepat2 dia pegi tuko, mcm lepas 2-3 minggu dia kahwin lah.... pastu bila Jabatan Pendaftaran bagi nama dia joejambulbengong ANAK SUNTAI @ joejambulbengong SMITH, dia mengamok sakan sebab tak suke ALIAS @ tu!! Jakun betul la dia ni!!

for us lah, tak kisahla dia nak tuko nama tp kan atas sebab yang munasabah sikitlar.

I dtg sini thn 2004 dulu, as a student, pastu dapat kerja sini, pastu ni dah kawin pulak. so tukar status je. Tapi memang sekarang I tak nak kuar dari US dulu, cos nak settle kan semua paper work, sampai dpt my green card, baru I nak kuar. sebab malas karang kuar, susah nak masuk balik.

Aah, NJ punya processing office kat Vermont.

Its not about glamour or tak glamour. Kalau kawin and menetap kat Malaysia memang tak kisah tak tukar nama, tapi kat foreign countries banyak hal kalau tak tukar. But as I said semua tu terpulang pada individu. Kawin mat salleh atau any foreigners bukan sebab glamour, its all about jodoh.
