Will single session school proposal help?
                          By Andrew, Sibu

IREFER to the opinion by Christina Thomas Mamora (BP, Oct 15). I believemany opinions have cropped up of late about single session schools. Asa teacher, I would just like to highlight a few points.
  • This idea was mentioned by our Prime Minister in response to thetragedy that happened to the much talked about Nurin. It is suggestedthat school hours be prolonged to 4pm by doing homework or having extraco-curricular activities. Thus, students can get extra 慹ducation

I went to a single session primary school when i attended a school in Keningau , Sabah. Some of my frens attended SUI (Sek Ugama Islam) later in the afternoon. During my time(remember, it was 1984-1989), it was not an issue because, primary schools were (still are i believe) plenty in Keningau area, so there was no requirement for 2-session. is it a necessity to extend school-time until 4pm ?
My point is:
1. If school time is extended till 4pm, how about SUI/KAFA/religious schools? Is the same syllabus provided at school?
2. Can we choose to pick up our children earlier than 4pm?
3. Yes, then the children will be protected and contained within the school compound from morning -4pm. After that? it's still back to the parents right? Then, to say that this move will provide safety measurement for the children is not ...accurate. Maybe if the intention is to ensure the children are disciplined to finish their homework after class (prep class in some school esp boarding school) and later attend the co-curriculum activities, then yes, i would agree. But then, back to Q 1. How? somebody can enlighten me here?

I do agree with Andrew, the writer of the above letter since i have few teachers in my family & extended family. I do understand the challenges faced by them and how "challenging" it is actually to be a teacher!!
