CIMB Islamic Global Emerging Market-The fund that NOT depands on US and UK markets.

What are they?

Emerging markets are countries that are restructuring their economies with market-oriented view of point. These markets offered opportunity in trade, technology transfer and foreign direct investment.

According to the World Bank, classification of emerging market is based on gross national income (GNI) and the size of equity market in relation to gross domestic product (GDP). In general, emerging markets are those countries with low GNI and small or less liquid and investable in its equity market.

Factor that leads to creation of emerging markets is the policy implemented by developing countries to fuel their development growth. Therefore, instead of using traditionally government borrowing from World Bank or IMF, developing countries began to rely on equity investment to finance the economic growth. These countries will attract equity investment and foreign direct investment to form a partnership in development.

Some examples of emerging markets are China, India, Brazil, Russia, Indonesia, South Africa, Mexico and South Korea.

Three Lessons From Warren Buffett That We Can Apply October 30, 2008

The world's richest man has been finding value lately in falling markets. We can too, if we apply three lessons from Warren Buffett.

1) Market fluctuations present opportunities

2) Long-term and short-term goals

Buffett advocates long-term investing. He admits he has no clue on whether the market will rise or fall in the next one month or next one year.
So in the short term, markets may continue to fall, but that has not stopped Buffett to invest in US equities.

He may not be buying them at their bottom, but then again, who can? Timing the markets is out of Buffett抯 league, so what makes us think we can do it confidently?

If you believe in the prospects of a company or economy to do well in the next few years, you will not be as worried over its outlook for the next few quarters.

It is also crucial to distinguish between how we use our short-term and long-term monies.

The short-term pot will take care of our daily expenses, potential emergencies and the big ticket items we intend to splash on within the next two to three years. These could include the exotic holiday to Machu Picchu or the donwpayment for the home you have been eyeing. To meet our short-term financial needs, leaving the money in safe, low-risk vehicles such as a savings account or a fixed deposit makes sense.

The next pot of money is really meant for our long-term goals. We can afford to give more time for our long-term investments to perform as we do not intend to touch that money for the next three years or more.

So, the point is, each one of us will have a different definition of short term and long term. Make sure we know our goals and divide the money into the different pots accordingly.

For our long-term pot, don抰 panic and sell out when our investments fall. Don抰 stay on the sidelines either, waiting for the markets to bottom. By the time the market really bottoms and starts rising, you may still be holding cash because you assume the bottom is not over yet.

3) Beware of inflation

Markets are plummeting and we are worried about our portfolios, our year-end bonuses or salary increments; for some of us, our jobs could very well be on the chopping board. But there is one big risk that has taken a backseat lately: inflation.

Buffett has also mentioned inflation as a key risk. "The arithmetic makes it plain that inflation is a far more devastating tax than anything that has been enacted by our (United States) legislature," he wrote in a Fortune article titled "How Inflation Swindles the Investor".

Inflation may be seen as a lesser concern, with commodity prices dropping sharply in the last few weeks. But it remains at a high level: Singapore抯 Consumer Price Index rose by 6.7% year-on-year in September. While this is lower than the CPI increase of 7.5% for a period of three months from April to June, the CPI numbers show that the interest rate from our savings account and fixed deposits is way too measly to be able to generate a positive real return.

We need our investments in the long-term pot to deliver a return higher that the inflation rate. Inflation has been hovering at relatively higher levels in the last few months. This makes our long-term investment decisions even more crucial

CIMB-Principal Bags Most Innovative Award for Investor Education in the Region

Kuala Lumpur: CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad (“CIMB-Principal”) recently won the Most Innovative Award for Investor Education by Asia Asset Management. The “Best of The Best Regional Award” recognises the Company’s exceptional education initiatives in 2008 to create awareness amongst investors on unit trust investments. J. Campbell Tupling, CEO of CIMB-Principal said, “It is a great honour to be recognised by Asia Asset Management in this category. We have always made it our duty to continuously educate our investors regardless of the economic condition, helping them to better understand investment concepts thus making the best decisions for their portfolios.”

Among the initiatives that enabled CIMB-Principal to win this award was the commissioning of an in-depth market audit of the Malaysian unit trust industry and the public perception of the industry. The survey had two key variables – the sales approach by the investment agent and the investor’s lack of understanding of the perspective and benefits of long-term investing. The survey resulted in a greater understanding of the investing behaviour of Malaysians nationwide, which benefited industry players in meeting the needs of their investors.

With the results of the audit, CIMB-Principal was able to re-focus all training of its unit trust agencies and bank affiliates’ sales force to emphasise on an asset allocation approach combined with a regular investment savings habit. This approach was adopted by many investors and success was attained and measured when there was an increase in investors utilising their EPF Members Investment Scheme for unit trust investments.  In 2008, 50% of total sales by the CIMB Wealth Advisors unit trust consultant sales force were generated via the EPF Members Investment Scheme. This was a significant increase of 18% year-on-year, from the previous year’s 32% mark. On the bank affiliate side, training campaigns have been carried out to train investment salespeople on an asset allocation approach.  An internal video was also prepared to train the bank sales force on all aspects of the external sales positioning and internal sales processing of investing via EPF.

In its educational efforts, CIMB-Principal also used other channels. A five-series investment educational article were published in the media fortnightly in two of the country’s leading newspapers and investment magazines in order to reach out to a wider group of investors. These articles were published concurrently when CIMB-Principal’s Flagship Fund campaign was launched in October 2008. The campaign featured a solid mix of eight “Flagship Funds” that focused on regular long-term investment through Ringgit-cost averaging and value averaging. CIMB Wealth Advisors also proactively reached out to the public by having free quarterly retail investment workshops to further help Malaysians understand the benefits of long-term investing. There was tremendous response to these workshops.

“Going forward, we will continue to educate the public and at the same time offer them a comprehensive series of products that range from domestic and international funds, Islamic and conventional funds, money market funds and bond funds. These factors have enabled us to stand out in the market and we have been duly recognised”, Tupling concluded.

On the other hand, CIMB Islamic Group Asset Management also received an award for Islamic Fund House of the Year for Malaysia in the Best of the Best Country Awards category.

Asia Asset Management is a well-respected monthly publication focusing on the institutional fund markets in the Asia Pacific region. Its annual awards recognise top performers in the region’s asset management industry. Its Investor Education award recognises the Company’s initiatives for retail and institutional investors in the Asia-Pacific region.

Datuk Noripah Kamso Wins Asset Management CEO of the Year

Wednesday, 27 February 2008

Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Noripah Kamso, Chief Executive of CIMB-Principal Asset Management Berhad, recently won CEO of the Year for Malaysia in Asia Asset Management’s Best of The Best Country Awards.

Asia Asset Management is a well-respected monthly magazine focusing on institutional fund markets in the Asia Pacific region. Its annual awards recognise top performers in the region’s asset management industry. Its CEO of the Year award recognizes the executive’s overall achievements—in particular by demonstrating leadership in the market that the firm operates in—over a three-year period.

Datuk Noripah said: “We are very pleased with this award from Asia Asset Management, which recognises CIMB-Principal’s achievements over the last two years. We thank our valued investors for their continuous support, which we have rewarded with improved fund performance. This is really a collective victory to be fully shared with all CIMB-Principal employees, its shareholders—CIMB Group and The Principal Financial Group—and our distribution partners.”

Under Datuk Noripah’s leadership, CIMB-Principal has steadily grown its assets under management to reach RM19.2 billion in 2007, making it one of the country’s largest fund managers. The company has also successfully ventured overseas, establishing an international presence in Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei and distinguishing itself as a provider of innovative Islamic asset management products. In addition, funds performance has improved, with some 82% of CIMB-Principal’s peer comparable funds being ranked in the top Quartiles for the one-year period.

Datuk Noripah has also been instrumental in bringing foreign investors and portfolio managers to invest in homegrown funds. Last year, she led a successful institutional and retail investors roadshow in Asia and Western Europe to market and establish distribution channels for the CIMB FTSE ASEAN 40 Exchange Traded Fund, which is listed on the Singapore Exchange(SGX).

Datuk Noripah has previously won Asia Asset Management’s Best of the Best Regional Marketing Personality of the Year, in both 2005 and 2006.
