McAfee Employee/Hacker to Go to Jail

- Brett Oliphant, a McAfee employee, may go to jail due to fraud

BrettOliphant,a security researcher who worked for ScanAlert, has beencharged withfraud and may spend several years in prison. Oliphant wasthe vicepresident of security services of ScanAlert and joined McAfee oncethecompany was acquired by the Santa Clara-based firm. Brett andhisbrother Bryan "are accused of the fraudulent sale ofunregisteredsecurities and of wrongfully receiving more than $1,215,000from thesale of unregistered securities," it is explained in a pressreleasepublished on the Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita website in December, last year.

It'sinteresting to note that the two brothers have been charged backinDecember 2007, but nobody noticed that one of the scammers wasactuallya McAfee security researcher. Now, here's something moreinteresting:according to various reports, Brett Oliphant joined McAfeein February,which means he became a member of the security teamapproximately two orthree months after the fraud charges had beenannounced.

The Register informsthatif found guilty, the security researcher may spend his next 32yearsbehind bars but it seems like Brett Oliphant considers he's notguilty.However, blogger Ronald van den Heetkamp got a tip that Brettis the onewho set up the fraud schemes in which he also lured hisbrother Bryan."I got an e-mail from someone who knew the brothers, andBrett alsoseems to have tricked his brother Bryan into his littlefraud schemes,"the blogger wrote in a new post.

Atthe time of writing this article, there's no official statementcomingfrom McAfee. However, according to The Register, some measureshave beentaken as the biography belonging to Brett Oliphant has beenremoved fromthe website, but several cache versions are stillavailable on the web.

"Brettis a widely recognized expert in computer security. He haspublishednumerous papers in the areas of network based vulnerabilitydetection,false positive mitigation and remediation strategies, aswell asnumerous vulnerability research articles," one of thesewebsites reads.
