BEIJING: Individuals who attempt to bring unprocessed bird's nest into China can be fined up to 5,000 yuan (about RM2,444) as it has been listed as a banned product, along with fresh fruits and vegetables. "Bird's nest (the delicacy made from swiftlets' saliva) is one of the key targets as it may carry bird flu virus. Some improperly processed bird's nest products may also contain excessive nitrite that harms human health," China Daily quoted deputy director of animal quarantine of Shenzhen bureau, Zhen Jianchuan, as saying. However, Zhen said canned bird's nest products were allowed as they were processed at high temperatures that could kill most of the viruses. In August, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspectionand Quarantine approved the rules, stating that individuals who entered the country should declare if they had any genetically modified products, endangered animals or plants in their luggage. The new regulations came into effect on Thursday. Even goods that are declared must have a valid certificate, otherwise they will be destroyed. -- BERNAMA
