Women should not drink any alcohol while they are pregnant because of the risks to their unborn child, an MP said today.
Bill Esterson wants it to  be made compulsory for all alcoholic beverages to carry compulsory warning labels directed at expectant mothers.
The Labour MP for Sefton Central on Merseyside was due to present his Alcohol Labeling (Pregnancy) Bill during this morning's session of Parliament, after PMQs.
Mr Esterson said at least one in 100 babies are born damaged because of the effects of alcohol.
'This is a vitally important issue,' he said ahead of introducing his bill today.
'Everything possible needs to be done to bring this to an end, and MPs in Parliament have the power to take steps to do just that.

'There has been confusion for pregnant women over whether they should or shouldn't drink during pregnancy.
'There has been confusion over how much they can drink.
'The best advice is it is better to be safe than sorry. If you're pregnant don't drink.
'But there is still some ambiguity from the Government on this.
'I am campaigning for the Government to make its guidance crystal clear.
'And I am campaigning for the alcohol industry to play its part and put basic labeling on its products warning of the dangers.

MUST SEE! The World's BIGGEST KILLER - #Alcohol

CHART: Drugs That Cause The Most Harm

    The Economist
    Sep. 22, 2013, 2:30 PM

MOST people would agree that some drugs are worse than others: Heroin is probably considered to be more dangerous than marijuana, for instance. Because governments formulate criminal and social policies based upon classifications of harm, a study published by the Lancet on Nov., 1, 2010, makes interesting reading.

Researchers led by Professor David Nutt, a former chief drugs adviser to the British government, asked drug-harm experts to rank 20 drugs (legal and illegal) on 16 measures of harm to the user and to wider society, such as damage to health, drug dependency, economic costs and crime.

Alcohol is the most harmful drug in Britain, scoring 72 out of a possible 100, far more damaging than heroin (55) or crack cocaine (54). It is the most harmful to others by a wide margin, and is ranked fourth behind heroin, crack, and methamphetamine (crystal meth) for harm to the individual.

The authors point out that the model's weightings, though based on judgment, were analysed and found to be stable as large changes would be needed to change the overall rankings.

"Drug harms in the UK: a multi-criteria decision analysis", by David Nutt, Leslie King and Lawrence Phillips, on behalf of the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs. The Lancet.
