Developer told to be humane in eviction of villagers

Residents of Kampung Ulu Temiang in Seremban, Negri Sembilan are not budging from their homes, despite the notice to vacate the land in 14 days from the land owner yesterday.

Siow Kim Leong, the lawyer representing the villagers, confirmed this morning that he received the notice from developer One Visa Sdn Bhd yesterday.

State DAP chairman, Anthony Loke Siew Fook, speaking on behalf of the villagers, said they would not back down until they were properly compensated by the developer.

“We had a discussion with the villagers and those present are asking the developer to pay them RM12,000 per house.

“The RM3,000 offer per house is not sufficient.

“Furthermore, 100 villagers’ names were submitted to the developer for compensation but the developer is only willing to pay 46 villagers, and RM3,000 at that,” he said.

Anthony, who is Seremban MP, said the villagers were refusing the offer as it was impossible to buy another house with RM3,000.

“The developer bought the roughly 45,000ha of land for RM18 million under auction. That works out to about RM2.80 per foot.

“I have learnt the developer intends to sell the land for RM60 to RM70 per foot. That means the value of the entire piece of land can go up to RM300 million.

“So show the villagers some human consideration,” he said,

Chin Siew Har, 49, who was born in the village, insists she will not leave.

“This is my birthplace. How can I leave?

“What I can do with the RM3,000?” she said.

Siow, who is also the Lobak assemblyman said, the state government had given the ownership of the land to Lesco Sdn Bhd sometime back in the 1980s. Lesco then asked the villagers to vacate the land.

“The villagers filed a case in the Seremban High Court and the case was heard up to the Federal Court and Privy Council in London.

“The villagers won the case and was offered compensation of either RM25,000 or a house. Some of them accepted the cash and others agreed to accept the offer of a house.

“However, the company failed to award the compensation and eventually wound up,” Siow said.

Again sometime in the 1980s, he said, the land was sold to another company called Medan Selasih Sdn Bhd. The villagers filed a case in Seremban High Court and again they won the case.

“However Medan Selasih mortgaged the land to a bank. When Medan Selasih failed to repay the loan, the bank auctioned the land.

“In 2012, One Visa Sdn Bhd bought the land through the bank auction for RM18 million.

“One Visa asked the villagers to leave the land. The villagers again brought their case to the Seremban High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court. The villagers lost their case in all three stages,” Siow explained. – August 12, 2015.
