Egyptian aviation official says lost plane is safe

Egypt's air accident chief said on Saturday that a missing passenger plane on its way to Russia had safely left Egyptian airspace and made contact with Turkish air traffic control.

"The ... Russian airline had told us that the Russian plane we lost contact with is safe and that it has contacted Turkish air traffic control and is passing through Turkish skies now," Ayman al-Muqaddam, the head of the central air traffic accident authority in Egypt, said in a statement.

A Russian civilian aircraft has reportedly gone missing in Egypt's Sinai region and is feared to have crashed.

There were said to be 212 passengers on board when Egypt's air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft, according to Sky News Arabia.

The plane was on its way to Russia after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh resort on the Red Sea.

Local media had reported that the plane has crashed, while other news agencies are now reporting Egyptian officials saying that the plane has left Egyptian airspace safely.

"The ... Russian airline had told us that the Russian plane we lost contact with is safe and that it has contacted Turkish air traffic control and is passing through Turkish skies now," Ayman al-Muqaddam, the head of Egypt's air traffic accident authority, was quoted saying by Reuters.

Russian news agency RT.com has said that the plane has possibly crashed according to local reports.

The Sinai Peninsula region in Egypt has been restive for the past several months, with Isis presence reported in the area.

A Russian plane carrying over 220 people has been lost from radars, according to sources in the Russian and Egyptian air traffic controllers. There have been reports the plane crashed over Sinai.
However, in a conflicting report, the Egyptian air accident chief said the Russian plane had safely left Egyptian airspace and made contact with Turkish air traffic control.

A source in the Russian air traffic controller told Ria Novosti that the plane went missing near Cyprus rather than over Sinai. But some Egyptian media claim the crash site has already been discovered in Egypt.

The Airbus that was reported going off radar and crashing in the Sinai Peninsula was travelling from the Egyptian resort Sharm El-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, Ria Novosti reported. It belonged to Kogalymavia airline, a small airline based in Western Siberia.

Egyptian sources told Reuters there were 212 people on board when the plane went down, most of them Russian tourists. Russian sources put the number at 224.
