KLANG’S 125-year-old railway station may cease operations as a new station is to be built adjacent to the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) headquarters in Jalan Perbandaran. The proposal was made by Prasarana to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) in line with the proposed realignment of the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) route. It was learnt that Prasarana is planning to build a railway stop for the Komuter trains near the proposed Bandar Klang LRT station located at the KTMB reserve land at Jalan Raya Barat below the proposed elevated LRT station. Since the construction of the new railway station will be funded by Prasarana, it is believed that KTMB will not object to the proposal.
LRT3 project director Norila Noah told StarMetro that the new Komuter station was aimed at providing connectivity for commuters of both the LRT and Komuter. Under the Land Public Transport Commission’s (SPAD) requirement, Norila said, the LRT station and the railway station must be located next to one another to ensure an integrated public transportation facility. “Both the LRT station and the railway halt should be within 150-metre distance from one another,’’ she said,adding that the proposed railway station would be built at about 100 metres from the LRT station. Norila said a covered walkway would be built to link the LRT station to the Komuter halt. She was unsure however, whether the existing railway station at Jalan Besar at South Klang would continue to operate. “We have yet to hold discussions with KTMB on our proposal but we do not foresee objection from the railway authority because the proposed railway station will be built by Prasarana in line with SPAD’s requirement,’’ she said. The new proposed railway station site was located about 400 metres away from the existing railway station at Jalan Besar. Under the initial proposal, Norila said, Prasarana had no plans to build the new Komuter halt because the Bandar Klang LRT station was supposed to be located at Jalan Besar near where the existing railway station is located. She said Prasarana was forced to realign its LRT3 route after shop-owners from Klang’s Little India objected to the move to have the LRT station at Jalan Besar. It was reported that the traders especially from Jalan Tengku Kelana had protested because they felt that the LRT project would damage the pre-war buildings in the area. “Since we have realigned the route of the LRT3 away from Jalan Besar, we have no choice but to also build a new railway station next to the Bandar Klang LRT station,’’ she said Meanwhile, a KTMB source told StarMetro that it was impossible for the existing railway to continue operations if the proposed railway stop at Jalan Raya Barat was accepted. “It is not possible for trains to make a stop for a distance of 400 metres,’’ he said. The RM9bil LRT3 project is expected to take off by middle of this year and completed in 2020.
