5 Years Of Portable Power For Battery Built In Devices

NEW YORK — The BatteryBox is by no means the only portable back-up power device on the market, but what makes it so clever is that once charged up, it stays charged up and is guaranteed to perform like new for five years. That, and the fact that despite being small enough to fit in the palm of the average adult hand, it has enough power to fully recharge a MacBook Air or eight iPhones.

Lithium ion batteries degrade over time. The more they are charged, run flat and are recharged, the more they will start to lose some of their capacity, until eventually, they give up the ghost. And a mobile device becomes static.

For power users — the type of people that have no choice but to always carry their smartphone recharging cable, or to work with their notebook constantly plugged in — an external battery pack is often the answer. It plugs into a device, usually via USB, and will top up the battery on the go with enough power to get through the day or the night.

However, because all external battery packs are lithium ion too, they will eventually start to wear out and stop holding charge. The fact that lithium ion batteries die is one of the reasons why certain elements of the tech community get so angry and vocal when a new smartphone or notebook launches that has a built-in rather than removable battery.

Because the battery's life ultimately determines the device’s useful life too.

That's what makes the BatteryBox so impressive. It is a battery with a brain. A system called BatteryOS that proactively manages how the battery behaves. The result is a battery pack that will last 3000 full charge and discharge cycles and that will still retain 96 per cent of its full capacity five years later.

But that’s just the start. When a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro is connected to the BatteryBox, the power goes directly to the computer, bypassing its own internal battery altogether in order to help protect its longevity.

BatteryBox’s makers, gbatteries, see the new device as just the start and has high hopes for its technology which could conceivably be integrated into any device, from a notebook, tablet or smartphone to a powertool or even an electric car, that uses lithium-ion batteries.

The BatteryBox can connect to any mobile device that supports recharging via USB and also has native support for Magsafe, the power connector used on Apple notebooks.

As well as adding 100 per cent charge to a MacBook Air or to eight iPhones, BatteryBox can also add a 50 per cent charge to a MacBook Pro notebook.

Available for pre-order now, the BatteryBox will go on sale this autumn, priced at US$139 (RM149).
