An Israeli police spokesperson said five people were detained on Wednesday for throwing stones at police who had entered the compound after stones were thrown at visitors at the holy site ahead of the Jewish new year, or Rosh Hashanah, which begins today at sundown. Short-lived stone throwing protests broke out on the Temple Mount as right-wing Israeli Jews were allowed onto the mount as Jews marked the New Year holiday, or Rosh Hashana, and Palestinian Muslims were denied entry. Tensions were high in the Old City and some Palestinians were arrested by Israeli security forces.
