Fruits for thought
Experts may recommend we eat 12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but actually doing it is no easy matter
THE sheer thought of consuming seven to 12 servings of fruits and vegetables in a day, as recommended by the National Cancer Institute, may seem daunting and even arduous to many.
Consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables
across all seven colours groups important
because they contain phyto-nutrients
which have high levels of antioxidants.
But in the past decade, there is growing evidence that points to the benefits of fruits and vegetables in preventing chronic diseases.
Yet, a study conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2003 revealed that on average, 88.3% Malaysians consume less than the daily recommended intake of fruits and vegetables.
Statistics from the Health Ministry further revealed that one in four Malaysians are at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime, and that may be attributed to the lack of greens in their diet.
‘Greens’ or plant-based foods like fruits and vegetables have inherent nutrients called phytonutrients that is known to prevent diseases. Phytonutrients are in essence Mother Nature’s medicine; they are the plants’ defence mechanism against pests, bacteria, ultraviolet radiation, free radicals and countless diseases.
Dr Elson Haas, the founder of Preventative Medical Centre of Marin in the US and author of seven books on health and nutrition, says: "Phytonutrients have potent antioxidant properties that are effective in neutralising free radicals, boosting immune cell functions and enhancing cellular repair."
He adds that phytonutrients are also well-known for their ability to promote cellular health or the health of our body cells. Cells are the building blocks of the human body and thus instrumental for our overall health and well-being.
"There are thousands of phytonutrients in fruits, vegetables, grains and some herbs. Sufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables can help to lower the risk of contracting cancer and even prevent certain types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other chronic diseases," says Haas.
"Each class of phytonutrients affect the health of our cells in different ways and specific phytonutrients often fight specific ailments. Thus, the best way to take advantage of nature’s ‘medicine’ is by consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables across all seven colour groups."
Colour in food comes from pigments which are generally grouped into seven different colours – green, yellow, orange, red, blue, purple and white. Pigments are important because they contain phytonutrients which contain high levels of antioxidants.
Elken Sdn Bhd, a leading network marketing organisation, has recently launched Fitorac, a special formulation of 21 natural and organic types of fruits and vegetables.
Fitorac’s potent mix of phytonutrients provides a rich source of antioxidants, which aids in reducing the risk of degenerative diseases and slowing down the ageing process.
Fitorac is not only an excellent source of phytonutrients but also contains 4,000 ORAC units. ORAC or oxygen radical absorbance capacity measures the antioxidant capacities of different foods.
This is one of the highest ORAC values in any product available in the market due in part to its special formulation of fruits and vegetables with high ORAC values like lingonberry, blueberry, raspberry, artichoke and kale.
"Consuming foods that are high in antioxidants is good for our health. The ORAC measures the ability of a food to disarm free radicals. Studies have indicated that eating lots of high ORAC foods can raise the antioxidant power of the human blood by 10 to 25%," Haas adds.
Now, Elken has made it easy for us to meet the daily recommended intake for fruits and vegetables. By drinking one glass of Fitorac every day, we will get the equivalent of seven servings of fruits and vegetables from all seven colour groups.
Another benefit of Fitorac lies in its three extracts for liver health: broccoli, wasabi, and artichoke.
"These special liver-friendly ingredients in Fitorac assist in decongesting the liver to enhance the body’s immune system, prevent the onset of chronic diseases and promote the body’s natural healing through the use of good nutrition," Haas says. |
