Cross-country: Life not same without durians
KUALA TERENGGANU: Life as he knows it, is practically over for 75-year-old Udin Husin who has recently been warned off durians by his medical doctor.
Not that he means it in a bad way but being a true aficionado of the king of fruits who has been consuming durians ever since he was a child, Udin said life would certainly not be the same anymore.
He said he also found out that it was a lot easier to quit smoking which he managed to do some years back without much fuss than to give up eating durians.
"I had to learn my lesson the hard way too earlier this month when I ended up in a hospital for a couple of weeks after falling off the ‘durian wagon’.
"I know now that with me being a diabetic together with having a few other illnesses, I can no longer afford to cave in to temptations," he said.
When met at his residence in Kampung Kolam on Thursday, Udin said he was baffled by the way his body responded when he attempted to eat a small durian recently.
"My mouth went dry, my body grew weaker and I felt like fainting. That was the moment I knew that I had to go ‘cold turkey’ on the one thing that I love most.
"But it has not been easy, especially now when the fruit is in season here in Batu Rakit and all I can do is take in its unmistakable and irresistable smell," said the father of six.
He admitted that he could not have totally given up on durians without the support from his family and friends.
His second son Noradira, 40, who lives not too far from him, said his father had come a long way in his battle to ignore durians.
"The sight and smell of durians do not bother him much anymore but as a precaution we now have a policy of not bringing any durians when visiting our parents," he said. |
