Leonard (Guy Pearce) is an insurance investigator whose memory has been damaged following a head injury he sustained after intervening on his wife's murder. His quality of life has been severely hampered after this event, and he can now only live a comprehendable life by tattooing notes on himself and taking pictures of things with a Polaroid camera. The movie is told in forward flashes of events that are to come that compensate for his unreliable memory, during which he has liaisons with various complex characters. Leonard badly wants revenge for his wife's murder, but, as numerous characters explain, there may be little point if he won't remember it in order to provide closure for him. The movie veers between these future occurrences and a telephone conversation Leonard is having in his motel room in which he compares his current state to that of a client whose claim he once dealt with.

When a bar owner discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife, a complex web of deceit and double crosses ensues in a small Texas town. The Coen brothers' first picture is an intricately plotted film noir filled with surprises at each turn. The cast, largely unkown at the time, includes Dan Hedaya as the cuckolded bar owner, Frances McDormand as the cheating wife, John Getz as the adultering bartender, and the fabulously creepy M. Emmett Walsh as the slimy, sweaty private detective who should not be trusted. The film is a marvel to experience; director of photography Barry Sonnenfeld has created stunning compositions filled with open spaces, and the sound--from the slightest footsteps or dripping water to a sudden shotgun blast--reverberates ominously, as if it is a character unto itself. Directed by Joel Coen and cowritten by Joel and his brother Ethan, BLOOD SIMPLE is an eerie testament to the limitless possibilities of low-budget filmmaking.

Film noir ni kalau kat US dorang panggil B-rated films. Kalau dulu-dulu, lecturer aku cakap setiap kali tayangan kat cinema, dorang akan main 2 movie, satu filem utama, dan lepas tu dorang main filem kedua... lebih kurang macam filler la.

Ciri-ciri utama film noir ni, penggambaran dia guna low-key lighting atau rely ambient lighting je. So kalau tengok pun nampak suram je. Pastu dalam filem ni boleh dikatakan tak ada hero. Watak utama lebih menjurus kepada seorang looser. Sesetengah filem memang tak ada seorang watak lelaki utama... mungkin 2 atau 3. Film noir banyak meengeksploitasikan femme-fatale. Cerita-ceritanya lebih kurang je, lelaki bergaduh kerana berebut seorang perempuan. Contohnya filem 'Killer's Kiss' (Kubrick, 1955). Takpun lelaki yg diperdayakan oleh wanita. Ending nya pulak tak semestinya happy ending. Selalunya ending yang hampeh.

Ada jugak film noir yg tak menggunakan element femme-fatale. Tapi sekarang ni kebanyakan film noir adalah gabungan film noir dan beberapa genre yg lain. Ada yang diselitkan sedikit horror atau thriller...contohnya macam 'Dark City' (Proyas,1998).
