Untouchables v Invincibles: The best XI from the great Man United and Arsenal teams
By Matt Lawton
Last updated at 1:07 PM on 19th February 2009
So who would win what some might consider the ultimate contest?
Who would emerge triumphant in a mouth-watering encounter betweenArsenal's Invincibles of 2003-4 and Manchester United's all-conqueringUntouchables of 2009?
Arsene Wenger would no doubt give the obvious response. His team wereunbeaten for an entire Barclays Premier League campaign and they wonthe title.
Manchester United, while five points clear and the reigning championsof England, Europe and the world, have already lost two leagueencounters and still have some way to go before Sir Alex Ferguson cancelebrate an 11th title.
The statistics tell their own story and suggest that, goal for goal,Arsenal provided the better entertainment. In their 38 games theyscored 73 times.
Hitman: Wayne Rooney celebrates his goal against Fulham
An average of 1.92 goals per game, compared to the average of 1.76 taken from the 25 games United have so far contested.
In terms of points per game, they are almost identical. Exactly 2.36 for United and a marginally better 2.368 for Arsenal.
But for all Arsenal's apparent invincibility, United's record breaking defence would appear to be superior.
While Arsenal conceded 1.05 goals per game, United's incredible cleansheet run leaves them with an astonishing average of just 0.4. Just 10goals in those 25 games, which is all the more impressive for the factthat Ferguson has used eight defenders in those 14 games withoutconceding a goal.
A contest between the two would indeed be fascinating. But imagine ifFerguson and Wenger could pick one team from the two squads. Would theyconsider the mother of all selection headaches or a managerial dream?
Goalkeeper: Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United)
Jens Lehmann was in the form of his life that season but Van der Sarhas to get the nod for his 14-game clean sheet record as well as hisbrilliant distribution. Ferguson should have bought him when PeterSchmeichel retired after the Champions League final in 1999.
Right back: Lauren (Arsenal)
This has been a difficult position for United this season, not leastbecause of Gary Neville's continued injury problems. Wes Brown, Rafaelda Silva and John O'Shea have all impressed as deputies but Lauren getsthe nod for consistency and availability.
Centre-backs: Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
Tough, tough call, and one that would probably divide Ferguson andWenger. In 2004, Kolo Toure was among the finest centre-backs inEurope. A wonderful combination of pace, skill and athleticism. Andremember how effective Ferdinand and Campbell were as a partnershipwith England, not least in the 2002 World Cup. |

|
|
|
|
Wall No1: Rio Ferdinand
Wall No2: Nemanja Vidic
Left back: Ashley Cole (Arsenal)
Again, a difficult call when Patrice Evra has been so consistentlyexcellent for United. But Ashley Cole was magnificent that season.Probably better than he has ever been in all his time at Chelsea.Remember, for instance, his performance against Cristiano Ronaldo inEuro 2004.
Right wing: Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
A no-brainer. The world's best players and, with Thierry Henry, thebest player we have ever seen in the Premier League. Ronaldo definitelygets the nod ahead of Freddie Ljungberg. He would probably even claimto look better in a pair of underpants. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
Engine: Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira
Central midfield: Patrick Vieira (Arsenal) and Michael Carrick (Manchester United)
Vieira was the best central midfielder in the world at that time andprobably the captain of this team. The temptation to select PaulScholes would be considerable but Carrick has developed into a terrificplayer at Old Trafford and his composure on the ball, as well as hisyouth, earns him selection alongside Le Grand Saucisse. No room, therefore, for Darren Fletcher or Gilberto Silva.
True great: Thierry Henry
Left wing: Robert Pires (Arsenal)
A younger Ryan Giggs would have earned instant selection but Pires getsthe nod here. He scored 14 Premier League goals that season and made 33starts as well as three appearances as a sub. On his day, he was alsoterrific and developed a real telepathy with Henry.
Strikers: Thierry Henry (Arsenal) and Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).
What a combination they would have been. Henry, for me the mostentertaining player in Premier League history, was at the peak of hispowers, scoring 30 league goals that season. While Rooney is in aheadof a 34-year-old Dennis Bergkamp and a marginally less gifted DimitarBerbatov.
Total score: Manchester United 6 Arsenal 5. |

Van der Sar 1 Schmeichel 3
Edwin van der Sar is the pick of the crop at Manchester United now. But who was better? Him or Peter Schmeichel?
Kelvin Leong looks at both players' game to see who was the true legend between the sticks for the Red Devils.

Playing Style
Van der Sar
The ‘Ice Rabbit' does not command his box nor defenders.
He plays the role of a keeper well, but all too often the marshalling of United's defence is left to Nemanja Vidic or Rio Ferdinand.
Great shot-stopper who hardly gets beaten by crosses and corner-kicks.
Schmeichel
The ‘Great Dane' is, and probably will always be, best remembered for his star-jump which made the already huge physical frame of his look even bigger in one-on-one situations and for penalty kicks.
One of the most vocal keepers of all time, he could always be seen yelling and shouting at his defenders when errors were made.
Another aspect of his game which makes him a United legend is his uncanny ability to score goals and cause chaos in opposing defences when the need arises.
Verdict - Van der Sar 0 Schmeichel 1
Experience
Van der Sar
The Dutch keeper walked into United with a bucket-load of European experience from his time with Eredevisie giants Ajax and Italian outfit Juventus.
He won the Champions League with Ajax, and represented Juventus in the Champions League for many seasons.
What proved crucial however, was his move to Fulham. That got him used to the English game, and by the time he moved to United he hit the ground running to become an instant success.
Schmeichel
Schmeichel joined United after spending his early years playing for Danish clubs Gladsaxe-Hero, Hvidovre IF and Brondby.
He tasted European action for the first time with Brondby in the UEFA Cup but other than that, he was facing second-class strikers in a lower league.
To have moved to a club of United's status and make the No.1 jersey his own instantly was a great feat.
But it might be noteworthy to state that the Red Devils only achieved European success (1999 Champions League winners) in his final season when he was 35.
Verdict - Van der Sar 1 Schmeichel 1
Clean Sheets
Van der Sar
With his clean sheet against Fulham, van der Sar now holds the Premier League record for the most number of consecutive clean sheets - 14.
He also holds the English league record of most minutes without conceding a goal, overtaking Steve Death's previous record of 1103 by a long mile.
The Dutchman's record now stands at 1302 minutes which also gives him the single-season world record previously set by Jose Maria Buljubasich in the Chilean Clausura back in 2005.
Schmeichel
Planet football's younger fans will look at van der Sar's record and think that he is the best goalkeeper when it comes to clean sheet stats.
However, prior to Van der Sar's feat, it was not until 2005 that Chelsea's Petr Cech beat Schmeichel's 10 consecutive league clean sheets record. A whole six years after Schmeichel set the record.
But two records still remain with the Great Dane.
He is the record holder for most number of clean sheets in the top flight with 176 clean sheets in 388 appearances.
That gives him a 42 percent clean sheets-to-games ratio which means he is still the record-holder when it comes to clean sheets-to-games ratio.
Verdict - Van der Sar 1 Schmeichel 2
Trophy Haul
Van der Sar
Premier League - 2
UEFA Champions League - 1
League Cup - 1
Schmeichel
Premier League - 5
UEFA Champions League - 1
League Cup - 1
FA Cup - 3
Verdict - van der Sar 1 Schmeichel 3

Usah bermimpi, Chelsea: Ferguson
- Reuters
