Liverpool vs Newcastle Player Ratings
Craig Bellamy stole the show at Anfield with a double strike as Liverpool claimed a 3-1 victory against Newcastle at Anfield on Friday night.
By Sham Majid
Liverpool
Pepe Reina - 6.5
Reina was very much a spectator against the Magpies although he could do absolutely nothing about Yohan Cabaye's deflected header which left him stranded.
Glen Johnson - 7.5
Another solid and steady display to prove that he is well on his way to recapturing his best form. Linked up well with Stewart Downing time and again on the right flank and used his pace and skill to get to the byline on numerous occasions. A pity some of his crosses were not attacked with gusto by the Liverpool forwards.
Daniel Agger - 7.5
The Danish maestro made at least three sensational forays into the Newcastle half and at one point, beat three players in an attacking surge before laying the ball back to Craig Bellamy. Had a comfortable night dealing with Demba Ba, although he was jostling with the forward when Cabaye's header nicked off the Senegalese.
Martin Skrtel - 8
The Slovakian's commitment and tenacity in clearing a goal bound Ba shot in the second half was personified when he raced ahead and bundled the ball away from danger before sliding into the Liverpool goal. Nearly scored himself when his glancing header from a Bellamy corner whistled past the goal.
Luis Enrique - 7.5
Found a lot of joy past Danny Simpson on the left flank and delivered some teasing crosses but alas, no Liverpool player was able to get on the end of it.
Charlie Adam (Off 59') - 6.5
Had a rather forgettable night in terms of set pieces although his cleared shot paved the way for Bellamy's equalizer. Eventually made way for talisman Steven Gerrard in the second half.
Jordan Henderson - 6
A headless chicken is perhaps an accurate description of Henderson's display. Although the former Sunderland man looked energetic and made himself busy on the ball, he was a peripheral figure for ninety minutes and did not really had any impact in any of Liverpool's main attacking forays. Although he did relay the pass for Steven Gerrard to slot home, Liverpool fans will be frustrated by another ineffective Henderson performance.
Jay Spearing - 7
Spearing produced a decent display against the Magpies and carved open the Newcastle midfield with some eye-catching passes. A no-nonsense midfielder, he held the Liverpool midfield well and allowed Adam and Gerrard to push up often to support the attack. He was lucky to escape with only some bruising following Cabaye's sickening stamp on his shin.
Stewart Downing - 6.5
Nothing too spectacular from Downing, who like Henderson, seemed to be in the Liverpool attack but yet did not make much of an impact. Did get the better of Taylor on several occasions and tried a couple of long range efforts but he fizzled away in the second half.
Andy Carroll - 6.5
It was meant to be his big night against his former employers but Carroll failed his big audition. Appearing slow and devoid of any positional sense, Carroll was at times isolated from the Reds attack. Although he was unlucky not to have scored after his header cannoned off the bar, his lack of awareness and build-up play will be a negative influence to Liverpool.
Craig Bellamy (Off 74') - 10
Absolutely brilliant from the first whistle right until his exit with a bleeding forehead. Bellamy terrorized the Newcastle defence with his direct running, pace and was full of tricks on the flanks. Took both of his goals with aplomb, displaying his keen predatory instincts.
Substitutes
Steve Gerrard (On 59') - 9
His importance to the Liverpool cause was exemplarily justified in his half-hour cameo appearance. Liverpool seemed to click upon his entrance and Gerrard orchestrated the Reds' offensive line with some magnificent crosses which Carroll failed to profit from. Showed he still has a keen eye for goal with his fantastic left foot finish to make it 3-1.
Dirk Kuyt (On 74') - 6.5
The Dutchman had too little time to make much of an impact and was given a run out for the remaining twenty minutes.
Newcastle
Tim Krul - 6.5
Besides the three goals conceded, Krul had an otherwise quiet. He did handle some crosses with comfortable ease especially in the second half.
Danny Simpson - 6.5
Was often outwitted and outpaced by Luis Enrique and the Spaniard ghosted through on a number of occasions, highlighting Simpson's defensive deficiencies.
Mike Williamson - 6
Had a torrid night dealing with Liverpool's crosses and attacks, especially in the second half. Struggled to marshal the backline along with his defensive partner Fabricio Coloccini.
Fabricio Coloccini- 7
Was often seen gesticulating to his team mates to hold the defensive forte, such was his side's indiscipline at times. Displayed his experience and composure and held off the likes of Carroll with ease in the first and second half.
Ryan Taylor (Off 46') - 6.5
Having already been struggling with an ankle complaint in the first half, Liverpool took full advantage of his injury with Downing and Johnson both taking turns to run at the defender, although Taylor never once gave up the battle. Was eventually hauled off at half-time.
Gabriel Obertan (Off 85') - 6
Another rather listless and tentative display from the former Manchester United midfielder. Decent enough in possession but he failed to add any attacking dimension to the Magpies midfield.
Cheick Tiote - 6.5
The Ivorian's poor clearance paved the way for Bellamy to ram home Liverpool's first goal and the towering midfielder did not have one of his better games, struggling to keep up with Liverpool's attacking impetus and purpose.
Yohan Cabaye-6
Although the Frenchman will claim the credit for his header that deflected off Demba Ba's shoulder, he was lucky to even stay on the pitch following his cowardly stamp on Spearing in the second half. A shameful challenge by a player known more for his elegant skills.
Jonas Gutierrez- 7
The Argentine midfielder never gave up the Newcastle cause and was constantly seen supporting the Magpies attack even when they were 3-1 down. Impressed with his enterprise and industry and tried to support both the attack and defence.
Haris Vuckic (Off 65') - 5.5
The youngster was virtually anonymous and seemed overawed by the Anfield crowd especially in the first half. Although he got more of the ball after the interval, he did not make any impact at all.
Demba Ba - 6.5
The Liverpool pair of Agger and Skrtel had Ba in their pockets throughout the match although the Senegalese nearly stole a goal for Newcastle when his effort was cleared off the line by a determined Skrtel.
Substitutes
Davide Santon (On 46') - 6.5
Although Santon displayed some nice touches, Enrique still continued to get the better of his opponent even after Taylor went off injured.
Hatem Ben Arfa (On 65') - 6
Made minimal impact with Liverpool well on the ascendancy by then.
Sammy Ameobi (On 85') - 5.5
Too little time to make his presence felt with Newcastle already trailing 3-1. |
