Benitez hits out at 'crazy' friendlies
By Mark Ogden
Friday, 8 February 2008
The Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has condemned the 'crazy' timing of the midweek international friendly fixtures after losing leading scorer Fernando Torres to a hamstring injury that will keep the Spaniard out of Sunday's trip to Chelsea.
Liverpool have an FA Cup fifth-round tie with Barnsley a week later, and the home Champions League match against Inter Milan three days after that, so any risk taken with Torres now could be disastrous.
Benitez, who is also awaiting news of midfielder Javier Mascherano following his trip to Los Angeles to play in a friendly for Argentina against Guatemala in the early hours of yesterday morning, claims that the scheduling of such friendlies is inappropriate during a congested stage of the club season.
Benitez said: "Because of the internationals this week, we have lost Torres to injury and Mascherano is not due back until today after playing for Argentina in Los Angeles. It is a busy period for the clubs, so it is not fair. It is crazy and really disappointing.
"Torres has a hamstring problem, which is not good because he is a big player for us. He will have scan, but when you leave a game early with a hamstring problem like he did, then the player is usually out for at least a week.
"You cannot take a big risk (by playing him on Sunday) because if you have a problem and lose a player for a month, it is much worse than losing him for week."
He continued: "I think he will be out of the Chelsea game, which is a problem because he has been scoring goals for us. I will now need to change my team, not because of rotation, but because I have to do it.
"I have a lot of respect for the managers like Fabio Capello, so I cannot say anything about team selection or tactics, but I don't agree with friendly games in busy periods like this." |

Grant: Title too far for Liverpool
Chelsea boss Avram Grant has told Liverpool to forget about this season's title. Ahead of tomorrow's big game, Grant said: "It is too far for them, it is too many points," before adding, as if to take the sting out of his assessment, "Anything can happen, but now it will be much more difficult." Make no mistake, Grant will defend Chelsea as fiercely as his predecessor. But he clearly sees no value in provoking a fight. "I think it is better for everybody, every person, not to fight against something but fight for himself," said Grant. "You cannot take the past and throw it away, say that it is not interesting, especially when two big clubs fight against one another. But I don't think this needs to be the whole issue. I have nothing against other clubs except that I want to be better than them, that's all." |

Benitez settles for fourth-place battle
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez admits they're fighting for fourth-place in the Premiership this season. He said: "We are fighting for fourth position and if we beat Chelsea we can think about maybe third position. "If we don't, we're running out of games and it'd be very difficult then." Meanwhile, John Arne Riise, 27, said: "The league is too far away for us now and it's going to be difficult for Chelsea. "United and Arsenal are very strong and will be hard to catch." |
