Lippi surprised Bayern choose Klinsmann

Sun 17 Feb, 03:59 PM

BERLIN (AFP) - Italy's World Cup winning-coach Marcello Lippi admits he is surprised German giants Bayern Munich have chosen Jurgen Klinsmann as their coach for next season, because of his lack of domestic experience.

Lippi, 59, who led his country to 2006 World Cup success, admitted he was shocked Bayern chose Klinsmann as the replacement for Ottmar Hitzfeld, who is leaving the club at the end of the season.

"Most Serie A coaches have normally worked for three or four years in the B or C leagues before they take a role at a top-flight club," Lippi told the Sunday edition of Die Welt.

"That is a priceless school to get your experience, because it is a good environment to learn your trade."

Lippi stood down as Italy coach after the World Cup and admitted he was approached by Bayern to train their side: "It was a huge honour."

And with Euro 2008 less than four months away, Lippi rates Germany and Italy as amongst the favourites  to be crowned European champions at this June's tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

As well as praising the good work done by German coach Joachim Loew, the Italian says Loew's decision to stick with Jens Lehmann as goalkeeper, even though he has struggled for first-team football at Arsenal recenty, was the right one.

"Loew has done some good work," said Lippi. "He has created a strong group in the Germany team, which you can't just change, consistency is important.

"If a player in a club team plays badly or lacks game time for whatever reason, it doesn't mean he should just be cut from the national side.

"Loew knows what he is getting with Lehmann, he has masses of experience and you just can't break up the structure, because Lehmann is on the bench."

Aberdeen outclassed by Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich (2) 5 Aberdeen (0) 1
Agg: 7-3
Bayern Munich showed their true colours to thrash Aberdeen and reach the last 16 of the Uefa Cup at the Allianz Arena last night. After a 2-2 draw at Pittodrie a week ago, the German giants were keen to finish the tie off as soon as possible, and Ottmar Hitzfeld's side were straight onto the attack.
Scottish fans' forum Lukas Podolski hit the woodwork early on before Lucio put them ahead after 12 minutes and fellow centre-back Daniel van Buyten added a second 10 minutes before the interval. Two goals from Podolski in the space of five second-half minutes killed the game off before Steve Lovell netted a consolation and Mark van Bommel added a fifth to complete the scoring.

Aberdeen coach Jimmy Calderwood made four changes to the side which had lost 3-1 to Hibernian at the weekend. Andrew Considine, Richard Foster, Darren Mackie and Josh Walker all started, with David Bus, Lee Mair, Christopher Maguire and Jeffrey De Visscher all dropping to the bench.
Bayern rested three of their regular first team, with Phillip Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose all sitting on the bench. Hitzfeld gave a start to 18-year-old Toni Kroos, and that did not turn out to be such a bad idea either.
The winger was a constant threat on the left wing and he tempted Alan Maybury into a foul just outside the area in the 12th minute as he was en route to goal. Maybury may have been fortunate not to see red for the professional foul, but the true punishment was to follow. Bayern's Brazilian defender Lucio drilled the resultant free-kick through a seven-man wall and into the roof of the net before Langfield could even react.
It was a deserved lead for the home side, who had hit the crossbar after less than 90 seconds following a slick move which culminated in a powerful effort from Podolski from the edge of the penalty area.

A sea of black shirts continued to flow towards Langfield's goal and Hamit Altintop went close to doubling Bayern's lead, but he and Luca Toni both scuppered chances with only Jamie Langfield to beat.
The tide began to turn in the 22nd minute with the visitors growing in confidence. Their first chance fell to Barry Nicholson, who was threaded through neatly and barged into Marcell Jansen, who was blocking his route to the ball. Then, an even better through ball from Maybury sent Mackie clear, but he pulled his shot just wide of the post with only Oliver Kahn to beat.
It proved to be nothing more than a brief interlude in Bayern's domination, and it was not long before the home side's other central defender, Van Buyten, nodded in the second.
Bayern were almost celebrating a third goal just before the referee brought an end to the first half. Lucio hit the woodwork again after Andreas Ottl's shot was pushed out to him at the far post by Langfield.
Aberdeen tried to make a game of it early in the second half, with Aluko looking lively after switching back onto the left wing after a spell on the right. Twice he penetrated the Bayern defence, and the second time his cross was put into the net by Mackie at the far post, albeit from a marginally offside position.
Mackie's frustration at seeing the assistant's flag produced the visitors fifth yellow card of the game after referee Robert Malek from Poland had cautioned Maybury, Walker, Aluko and Nicholson in the first half.
Aberdeen's resistance did not last long and normal business was resumed when Podolski scored the third. Substitute Klose's shot was only parried by Langfield and Podolski was on hand to strike the loose ball high into the net.

Five minutes later, the Germany striker, who is more certain of his place in the national team than he is for his club, headed Bayern's fourth after rising unchallenged at the far post to meet Schweinsteiger's corner.
Lovell scored a consolation for the Dons four minutes after coming on, meeting Nicholson's free-kick at the far post.
But Van Bommel restored Bayern's four-goal advantage with a low, drilled shot into the bottom corner of the goal five minutes from time to send the Uefa Cup favourites through.

Bayern Munich plays Hamburger SV hoping to extend Bundesliga lead

Bayern Munich failed to beat Werder Bremen at home. Now, it has an opportunity to distance itself from another pursuer in the Bundesliga when it hosts Hamburger SV.

Third-place Hamburg is already six points behind Bayern, the leader, and a loss in Sunday's match in the Allianz Arena would likely mean forgetting about the title.
Heading into the 21st round, Bayern has 43 points, Werder 40 and Hamburg 37. Two weeks ago, Bremen held Bayern to a draw in Munich to stay in contention.
But Werder has a tough match at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday and could lose more ground.
Bayern could also profit indirectly from another match, Saturday's showdown between Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke, both on 35 points.
Schalke briefly jumped to third place but fell to sixth after losing at home to Wolfsburg in the previous round. A draw in Leverkusen would mostly benefit Bayern. If there is a winner, the loser would most likely also see its title hopes fade away.
All the top teams go into the weekend after midweek duty in European competitions and Schalke has been bolstered by a 1-0 win over Porto in the Champions League.
Franck Ribery could return to the Bayern midfield after a thigh injury.
"Franck might practice with the team Friday and if that's the case he might be considered for Sunday," coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said.
Ribery's return would be welcome and if striker Luca Toni remains healthy, Hamburg will plenty to deal with.
Toni is coming off a three-goal performance at Hannover 96 and he leads the Bundesliga with 13 goals. The Italian World Cup winner has scored 22 goals in 26 games since he joined Bayern at the start of the season.
Hitzfeld and his Hamburg colleague Huub Stevens will be facing each other in the Bundesliga for the last time.
Both are leaving at the end of the season, Hitzfeld to become coach of Switzerland and Stevens to guide PSV Eindhoven.
While Bayern quickly appointed a successor, former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann, Hamburg still has not presented a replacement for Stevens.
Hamburg has won only 10 points in the seven games since Stevens announced his departure and a loss in Munich could force Hamburg's management to deal with Stevens' succession quickly.
Hamburg won the last two games in Munich, both 2-1. But no Bundesliga team has won at Bayern three times in a row.
This weekend also features showdowns between teams struggling against relegation, with Nuremberg hosting Energie Cottbus on Sunday and Arminia Bielefeld facing Duisburg on Saturday.
Bochum kicks off the round against Hannover 96 on Friday, while on Saturday Wolfsburg plays Hertha Berlin, Stuttgart hosts Karlsruhe and Hansa Rostock visits Borussia Dortmund

Ten-Man Bremen Slip Up

Sat 23 Feb, 08:09 PM

Werder Bremen missed the chance to go level on points with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday afternoon after going down 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Greece international Ioannis Amanatidis scored the only goal of a fractious encounter after 56 minutes.

By then, the visitors were down to 10 men after Bremen's Brazil playmaker Diego was shown a straight red card after an altercation with Sotirios Kyrgiakos five minutes before the break.

Table-topping Bayern meet Hamburg at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

Hamburg dropped a place to fourth on Saturday after being leapfrogged by Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen beat fifth-placed Schalke 1-0 thanks to Manuel Friedrich's 85th-minute goal, the defender scoring with a deep cross which sailed over visiting goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Schalke's misery was compounded by the injury-time dismissal of Jermaine Jones.

Karlsruhe's European ambitions were dented by a 3-1 defeat at defending champions Stuttgart.

Mario Gomez and Roberto Hilbert put the hosts in command only for Tamas Hajnal to pull one back with nine minutes to go.

Cacau had the final say though with a last-minute strike for Stuttgart.

Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin fought out a goalless draw while Diego Klimovicz's solitary strike midway through the second half was enough for Borussia Dortmund to edge out Hansa Rostock 1-0.

The pressure continues to grow on Arminia Bielefeld coach Michael Frontzeck after his men slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to a Duisburg side which started the day at the foot of the table.

Silvio Schroter and Manasseh Ishiaku netted for the visitors to move them to within a point of fourth-bottom Bielefeld and safety.

On Friday night Bochum managed their first home win since November with a 2-1 victory over Hannover.

An unfortunate Steve Cherundolo own goal gave the hosts the lead after 30 minutes, and despite Mike Hanke pulling the visitors level just after the break, Benjamin Auer responded almost immediately with the winning goal.
