Valencia oust Roma at top

Valencia went top of Champions League Group D after a 2-1 win over Roma at the Mestalla on Wednesday. Valencia went ahead through a Miguel Angulo volley although Francesco Totti levelled with a penalty after Emiliano Moretti hauled down Mauro Cassetti. David Villa scored the winner before half-time

Most of the action took place in a cracking first 45 minutes, Roberto Ayala almost opening the scoring for Valencia with a trademark header 60 seconds in while Daniel de Rossi and Mauro Cassetti both should have scored in a furious opening ten minutes.

Valencia opened the scoring 13 minutes in, excellent play by Moretti on the left allowing Villa to knock the ball back to Angulo, who finished with aplomb.

The lead did not last long though - a controversial but not exactly contentious penalty was given to Roma on 17 minutes.

It was controversial because German referee Herbert Fandel initially did not point to the spot, changing his mind on conferring with his assistant after furious Roma protests.

The only bone of contention, however, is why he did not give the decision immediately, Moretti firstly guilty of handball before rugby tackling Cassetti in a single, almost comic incident.

In the aftermath, Ayala was booked for protesting, which did not affect Roma captain Totti who levelled the match with a cool finish into the bottom left corner of the net.

VILLA WINNER

Moretti made amends for his defensive howler with the key run and pass for what would turn out to be Los Ches' winner, cutting in from the flank before sending a low pass into Villa, whose turn and finish capped a superb move just before the half hour.

Totti and David Pizarro both had chances for Roma - who introduced Vicenzo Montella in the second half in an attempt to force an equaliser.

Valencia held firm, however, with both Villa and Ayala going close, although Daniele De Rossi had a free-kick sail just over in what was a less intense second half.

The Spaniards top Group D with a maximum six points in two games, while Roma stay second on three points after Olympiacos and Shakhtar fought out a 2-2 draw in Donetsk.

Valencia should take maximum points from their home game against Gimnastic Tarragona. They beat Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday and are expected to rest Miguel Angel Angulo and Fernando Morientes, although top scorer David Villa keeps his place.

Barcelona's Giuly: Valencia stronger than Real Madrid
tribalfooball.com - September 29, 2006

Barcelona midfielder Ludovic Giuly admits he is worried more about Valencia than Real Madrid as title challengers.

"Real Madrid is not the team that worries me most. I think that Valencia, that is stable and has reinforced very well, will give more problems to us", Giuly told France Football.

"Personally, I feel very well. I've extended my contract (to 2008), I'm settled in the city and feel good about my place in the team."

Inter Milan tracking Valencia's Tavano
tribalfooball.com - October 02, 2006

Inter Milan are keeping tabs on Ciccio Tavano's situation at Valencia.

The Italian hit out at management last week after being frozen out by Los Che coach Quique Flores.

Inter patron Massimo Moratti is a big fan of Tavano and has been alerted to his potential availability after Valencia was linked with a move for West Ham striker Carlos Tevez in yesterday's British press.
