The film Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton is a modern day take of the gothic story of Frankenstein and Beauty and the Beast, being about an isolated unfinished monster who is adopted into 1950’s middle class America, and falls in love with a teenage girl.
It belongs to the gothic genre as it can firstly closely relate to Frankenstein, and has the elements of the unfinished creation, the gothic castle and setting and the suspenseful plot with a love story, which all fit under the gothic genre.
In Edward Scissorhands, the characters are archetypes of the typical gothic genre, and this can be proven if we examine the similarities between Edward Scissorhands and Beauty and the Beast, as well as Frankenstein which are both gothic novels which posses the gothic traits of the characters.
The main character Edward in the film is a creation who tries to be accepted into society but is judged straight away due to his difference and the way he looks, with his black clothes and quirky looks, which contrast drastically to the town.
