FIFA had agreed to sanction the tournament after reaching an amicable solution with the organisers Gifted Group. In return, Gifted and the G-14, a group of top European clubs, will withdraw their lawsuit against the world football governing body.
FIFA had initially sanctioned the tournament but then abruptly withdrew their endorsement, prompting London-based Gifted Group to initiate legal action. The tournament will involve Under-19 teams from AC Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal, Boca Juniors, Chelsea, Flamengo, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Porto, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester United, Paris St Germain and PSV Eindhoven plus teams from Qatar and hosts Malaysia. Kuantan, Alor Star, Malacca and Kuching will host the preliminary rounds with the final to be played at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil. Blatter said: 揟he teams taking part are not just from the G-14 group but also Qatar and Malaysia. |

Arsenal's Liam Brady, MU's Brian McClair coming to M'sia
KUALA LUMPUR: Manchester United legend Brian McClair and ex-Arsenal star Liam Brady are among a list of renowned former football players who will be attending the inaugural Champions Youth Cup (CYC) as ambassadors of their respective clubs.
McClair, who secured his place in Old Trafford's history books when he became the first player since the legendary George Best to score 20 league goals in a season, is currently the director of the club's Youth Academy.
He will be in Malacca closely watching the progress of Manchester United's youngsters who have been drawn in Group C alongside with FC Porto, Internazionale and Boca Juniors.
His accolades include three FA Cup medals (1990, 1994 and 1996), the 1992 League Cup title (he netted the winning goal against Nottingham in the final), four Premier League titles (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997) and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup medal in 1991.
"McClair was a tremendous player during his heyday. He was also a huge name in Malaysia and I am certain there are many fans here who will be thrilled to know he will be in the country during the Champions Youth Cup," Gifted Group Malaysia director Datuk Phan Boon Siong said here on Friday.
Brady, a former Irish international and Arsenal midfielder, is presently serving as the Head of Youth Development at Arsenal.
The Dublin-born Brady, bagged an FA Cup title with Arsenal (1979) and later two Series A trophies (1981 and 1982) with Juventus.
On the coaching front, after stints with Celtic and Brighton & Hove Albion, he took over the Arsenal's Youth Academy in 1996.
Under his guidance the Gunner's youth sides have performed remarkably well and have won several tournaments.
In addition, to McClair and Brady, all the other participating clubs, with the exception of Malaysia and Qatar, will be led by "ambassadors".
The other former prominent footballers turned "ambassadors" who have confirmed their appearance in Malaysia are Beppe Baresi (Inter Milan), Filippo Galli (AC Milan), Amara Simba (PSG), Edward Sturing (PSV), Raul Plasmann (Flamengo), Kern Werner (Bayern), Julio Alberto Moreno Casas (Barcelona), Michaelangello Rampulla (Juventus), Giuseppe Baresi (Porto) and Frank Arnesen (Chelsea).
Tickets for the Champions Youth Cup, which will be held next month in the Klang Valley, Kuching, Kuantan, Alor Star and Malacca, are available at Watson outlets in the respective places. The tickets are priced at RM12 for which fans will be able to watch two matches.
For further information on tickets, please call 1-300-88-2383 or visit www.thechampionsyouthcup.com. - Bernama |

FAM ‘boikot’ Kejohanan CYC
FAM ‘boikot’ Kejohanan CYC
