You can check out Jac's vocals when a re-packaged Inilah Jac is released this Tuesday. The Sony BMG album, with a new cover, will offer the extra track, Satu Harapan, in both Malay and English. It will also include a minus-one track for this song.

The stage is set for a regional launch pad with Ikon Asean and perfect-pitch Jacyln Victor tells SUBHADRA DEVAN that singing before a crowd is a high she misses.

SHE walks smartly into Avanti, the bling on her high heels glinting in the soft light of the up-market restaurant at Sunway Resort Hotel, her knee-length black strapless dress flouncing with every step.

It's a four-course dinner evening with the irrepressible Jaclyn Victor and the highlight is Gemilang, to which the urbane crowd sang the chorus lustily.

It's a fun time for everyone. The 29-year-old former pub singer, popularly called Jac, obviously enjoys performing in front of an audience and gets the normally sit-down crowd up on its feet for I Will Survive.

Jac is up for the Ikon Asean award tonight, to be held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre. She is up against actress-singer Vina Morales from the Philippines and Judika from Indonesia.

It's been a nice three-year ride for this singer from Kepong who got her shot at stardom when she won 8tv's Malaysian Idol 1 reality competition.

Her rise as a singer out of the smokey dregs of pubs and clubs to the national stage sounds like a formulaic feel-good Hollywood film, but it has its drawbacks.

Performing live is something Jac says she misses. "I'm like a car whose engine needs to be tuned constantly. The voice gets thin or sounds tired if I don't sing often enough," she says just before a RHB Ikon luncheon at Hilton Petaling Jaya last week.

"You must understand what it was like when I singing the pub circuit for seven to eight years," says Jac, as she pops a mint.

"I would sing at least 28 songs a night, with a live band.

"At Avanti, it's a 45-minute set and I can maybe squeeze in seven songs. That's because I like to talk to the audience.

"Seven songs... and that's with minus-one track, which I need to get used to as I've only before sung with a live band," says Jac, seated on a plush black sofa in the hotel's Uncle Chili's, gesturing with slim fingers, one of which flashes a sparkling diamond ring.

She pauses before adding: "And these days, a week or two would go by before I get to sing live on stage again. Singing before an audience keeps your voice in form."
