KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman, enraged over the death of his son who drowned following an attack by a group of rowdy motorcyclists near a lake, managed to track down and catch the alleged leader of the group. The man was on a business trip to Johor when he received the news of his son’s death. His son Khairul Idzham, 19, was with five friends at a hut near the lake at Taman Tasik Ing Tai Kim, Setapak, when they saw a group of about 20 motorcyclists allegedly trying to rob two men there at 11.36pm on Thursday. When the two men managed to escape, the group turned their attention on Khairul and his friends.
Wangsa Maju OCPD Deputy Supt A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said the culprits demanded that Khairul and his friends hand over their mobile phones and other valuables. “When the victim did not bow to the group’s order, they hit him with blunt objects. “A scuffle ensued and Khairul fell into the lake,” he said, adding that one of his friends jumped in to try and save him. He said the teenager struggled with the friend and grabbed him in panic. “When the friend let go of Khairul, he disappeared in the water. “Police and the Fire and Rescue Department were called to the scene and Khairul’s body was discovered at around 1.30am,” he said. DSP A. Asmadi said the boy’s father rushed back to Setapak and spoke to Khairul’s friends about the tragedy. “One of the friends told him that they recognised the alleged leader of the group. “He tracked down the boy and handed him over to police for further action,” he said, adding that a special task force managed to arrest six other boys, all aged between 13 and 16. DSP A. Asmadi said that police were now on the hunt for seven teenagers in connection with the murder. Those with information on the case should contact the police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or visit the nearest police station.
