Cannavaro Set To Renew Madrid Contract

Fabio Cannavaro is set to sign a contract extension with Real Madrid until 2010, according to Tuttosport.

Cannavaro joined the Spanish giants in the summer of 2006 after the Calciopoli crisis forced him to leave old club Juventus.

The 34-year-old, who was named European and World Footballer of the Year that same year has never really shown his best form in Spain, however his leadership qualities at the back have been crucial in Madrid winning back-to-back La Liga titles.

Cannavaro抯 contract with Los Merengues runs out in 2009, and there has been talk of a possible return back to Italy with hometown club Napoli.

However, according to Tuttosport, Cannavaro is set to sign a new one-year extension on his Madrid deal that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until the summer of 2010, by which time the defender will be almost 37.

Cannavaro is the captain of the Italian national team, and will lead out his country at Euro 2008 in a bid to add a European crown to the World Cup won in Germany in 2006.

The former Parma stalwart is the second most capped player ever for the Azzurri, having represented his country on 115 occasions. He is nine behind record-holder Paolo Maldini.
