Fan competition to design McLaren overalls
Those with a desire to dress British World Champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button could see their dreams come true thanks to a new competition by McLaren, which allows fans to submit race overall designs to be worn in action.
The competition – Dress me for the Finale! - is the brainchild of team sponsor Hugo Boss, whose radical designs can feature a selection of colours and patterns.
After adding tiger-based artwork to the overalls in Malaysia, the Woking team modified them dramatically in China by revealing Hamilton and Button in red for qualifying - marking the 30th year in partnership for the two companies. |

McLaren drivers confident after Friday practice
McLaren enjoyed first and third positions on the Practice 2 timesheets as Istanbul Park finally dried out on Friday afternoon. Although Jenson Button is somewhat disappointed that not all new components have been brought to the circuit, both he and team-mate Lewis Hamilton head into the weekend full of optimism.
“I’m pretty happy with how today went,” the 2009 winner began. “The car’s been working reasonably well – there are always things you want to improve, but we’ve made some good progress and have a lot of useful data to go through.
“Trying to get the car to ride the bumps well into Turn 12 has been difficult, but we improved it through the session. Turn 12 is really bumpy – it’s like they put a motocross jump in there!
“We haven’t put everything on the car that we wanted to this weekend, which is disappointing, but we still have some useful upgrades so it’s nice to keep moving forwards.”
Hamilton returns to Turkey as the victor of last year’s event, in which the team scored a 1-2 result after Red Bull pairing Vettel and Webber collided.
“I initially struggled a little bit with setup, which we can look at and fix overnight, but I was really pleased with my long-run pace,” Hamilton said. “I think it was probably one of the best practice long-runs I’ve ever had.
“Generally, our car has a pretty good baseline. We’re still in the fight. The most important factor this weekend is to continue with our consistency – getting on the podium is my target and if we can win that’ll be even better!” |

Button: Passing too easy with DRS
Jenson Button believes that a quicker strategy in Istanbul would have been to make a later first pit-stop in order to allow for a short final stint. From sixth on the grid, the 2009 World Champion was relegated to the same place following late-race passes from Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg as his tyres deteriorated.
"I think most people were probably on my strategy at first, but changed because they were damaging their tyres," said the McLaren driver. "We didn't leave our tyres long enough, though - they were good at the end of every stint, but we still came in. We should have stayed out for longer, because it made the last stint impossible, with just too many laps to do."
He also expressed criticisms of the new-for-2011 Drag Reduction System (DRS), which is designed to aid overtaking:
"You're not racing anymore, you’re just a sitting duck – the difference in speed is unbelievable." |

Whitmarsh thanks lollipop man for reactions
McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh has issued an official ‘thank you’ to McLaren Chief Mechanic Pete Vale, whose rapid reactions were tested to their limits in Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix. The incident in question was Lewis Hamilton’s lengthy pit-stop, which almost resulted in a pit lane collision as he rejoined.
“I want to say something about Pete Vale, our Chief Mechanic, who operates the lollipop during all our pit-stops,” Whitmarsh said in a McLaren press release.
“He acted quickly and level-headedly during Lewis’ problematic second pit-stop, when two wheel nuts cross-threaded on the right-front, to prevent a potential collision – so well done Pete!” |
