Lotus to switch to black and gold livery for 2011

Lotus Racing will run its cars in a black and gold colour scheme next season, the Norfolk-based outfit has revealed in the countdown to the this weekend’s season finale in Abu Dhabi. It is an interesting development, especially as the dispute with Proton - owner of Group Lotus - over the use of the Lotus name has still to be resolved.
Lotus Racing noted that the decision 'echoes the evolution of Lotus F1 cars of the past by moving from the iconic green and yellow paint scheme of the first season to the much loved black and gold'.
Colin Chapman’s original 'Team Lotus' squad ran in the black and gold livery, as part of a sponsorship deal with Imperial Tobacco to promote its John Player Special brand during the 1970s and 1980s.
Lotus also added that it wants fan input to help design the livery for the 2011 F1 season.
“We have worked all year to make sure our fans are given unprecedented access to our team. We are all very excited about the move to a black and gold paint scheme for next season, and we want our fans to help us design the livery that will be racing around the world next year,” explained Head of Marketing Silvi Schaumloeffel.
“We will shortly be announcing exactly how the fans can take part in our design process, so keep an eye on our website - www.lotusracing.my - for more details.
“The person who designs the livery we finally choose will be joining us at our first test next year to see the car out on track for the very first time, so for Lotus and F1 fans it is the chance of a lifetime to help us take the next step forward in our amazing story in 2011.”
“When we first unveiled our 2010 car there was unanimous praise for our decision to bring the historic green and yellow livery back to the modern F1 grid,” added Riad Asmat, Lotus Racing’s Chief Executive.
“I know the return to the track of the legendary black and gold will be met with even more universal support as it strikes such an emotional chord with fans around the world.
“Giving those fans the chance to help us bring it back to the contemporary grid is true to our core belief of putting our supporters right at the heart of Lotus Racing – we can’t wait to show the world what we come up with!”

Lotus finishes tenth in championship
All at Lotus Racing were delighted on Sunday night in Abu Dhabi, with the 2010 debutants having successfully finished the season tenth in the Constructors’ Championship, much to the delight of Team Principal Tony Fernandes.
Although none of this season’s new teams have scored points, Lotus finish tenth – and therefore take away the added prize money of 17 million pounds – thanks to achieving the best individual race result, with that being Heikki Kovalainen’s 12th place at Suzuka.
“I am completely relieved, completely ecstatic, completely happy and completely vindicated in making the decision to go into F1,” Fernandes smiled after the race.
“What we have achieved today is what dreams are made of. To complete 19 races after having just five months to build a car and finish in tenth in style is something that is truly magical. It shows you that even in the modern age where money and power counts for so much, there is a chance for ambition and dreams to shine. 2010 is a year that we can be proud of.
“We brought Lotus back into F1 after many had talked about it, but we did it. I can confidently say that everyone associated with the Lotus history can be very proud of what we have done this year. This is the first chapter of a long career ahead and we will create our own future, destiny and history from here.
“I am thankful to all the incredibly special staff we have in Hingham, Malaysia and here in Abu Dhabi for what they have done this year and my abiding memory of 2010 comes from one of our engineers, who told me he had achieved higher grid positions with other teams, but never with a team that feels as special as this.
“To all the Lotus fans thank you so much for your support – we could not have done it without you. I am thrilled that Lotus Racing has opened up F1 to everyone out there, and we cannot wait to see you next year.”

Lotus boss torn over name change

Malaysian-owned Lotus Racing could have a completely new identity in Formula One next season although team principal Tony Fernandes says he wants to keep the Lotus name if he can.
What is certain is that the team, best of the three newcomers this year, will not be called Lotus Racing after a falling out with Malaysian carmaker Proton and their Lotus Group who had allowed them to use the name.
Fernandes had planned to switch to Team Lotus, the name used under founder Colin Chapman to win multiple titles in the 1960s and 1970s, but his rights are disputed by sportscar makers Lotus Group.
The matter is due to go to the London High Court some time next year and has been further complicated by reports that Lotus Group are likely to join the Renault team as title sponsors and investors.
Gerard Lopez, the Renault team chairman and major shareholder, said his Genii Capital had long-standing links outside Formula One with Lotus Group but would not comment on future plans.
"We are interested in Lotus as a car company. Is there something with the team to be done? We'll see," he said.
Fernandes' outfit is also due to use Renault engines, which would lead to the messy situation of two rival Lotus Renault teams on the grid unless a deal is done between the sides.
Fernandes told Reuters after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the weekend that he was torn about how to proceed.
"I've received 2,800 emails in the last two hours from people all over the world saying please keep the Lotus name with you. It means nothing if it goes somewhere else," said Fernandes.
"Let's see. But what we don't want to be involved in is destroying the Lotus name.
"If we go to court, yes, we will win," he added. "But the brand will suffer, and I don't want to be part of that brand being destroyed, I don't want to drag it through the gutter.
"We feel that we've done justice to the Lotus name. We want to keep it. We feel it's ours. But we are also pragmatic human beings."
AirAsia airline entrepreneur Fernandes is expected to sell the Team Lotus name to Lotus Group but he said an alternative, albeit less likely, would be for him to acquire Lotus cars from Proton.
"If it was an option that was available to us, that's feasible," he said.
