Andrei Arshavin Wants To Prove Himself At Arsenal
"I didn't feel anything special. In my city I have been popular since long ago."
That is how Andrei Arshavin, speaking to The Daily Mail, described his return to Russia after leading his national team to the EURO 2008 semi-finals last June.
The 27-year-old has spent his entire career at Zenit St Petersburg, his hometown club, and his immense talents have long been appreciated in his native land.
But it was only after his exploits in Austria and Switzerland, and his scintillating performances in the UEFA Cup - which included a best-on-ground display against Rangers in the final - that the rest of Europe began to really take notice.
Barcelona and Real Madrid have been intermittently linked with the tricky forward, but it is from England - and, in particular, North London - that the strongest interest has eminated.
Tottenham Hotspur tried and failed to sign Arshavin in the summer, but now Arsenal are entrenched in negotiations with Zenit as they seek to add a creative spark to their injury-riddled squad.
The Ballon d'Or nominee revealed earlier in the week that he was eager to join the Gunners, and now he has eloborated on exactly why he hopes to leave Zenit this winter.
"I want to play at a good European club and I want to prove how good I am," Arshavin said, before touching on the gulf between his current club and the continent's elite.
"I think it is a distant prospect that Zenit will ever be as big as the likes of Real Madrid or Juventus.
"It will take some time and Zenit must win many titles first. But recently the club have been progressing.
"The main thing is that the management should have willingness and players should be provided with opportunities."
Arshavin is not quite at the Emirates yet, though, as Arsenal are still trying to talk Zenit down from their €22 million asking price.
