Ratu Elizabeth sedia berjimat-cermat
LONDON 6 Julai - Seperti berjuta-juta rakyatnya yang lain, Ratu Elizabeth II juga perlu berjimat cermat dengan mengurangkan perbelanjaan dan menangguhkan kerja membaiki istana memandangkan kedudukan kewangan kerabat diraja itu semakin berkurangan disebabkan krisis bajet Britain.
Penyata akaun yang disiarkan semalam oleh Istana Buckingham menunjukkan, kos keseluruhan yang ditanggung oleh kerajaan untuk membiayai kehidupan kerabat diraja itu yang berjumlah 38.2 juta pound (RM185 juta) pada tahun fiskal sehingga 31 Mac lalu.
Jumlah itu bersamaan dengan 62 pence (RM3) seorang dan kurang tiga juta pound (RM14.7 juta) berbanding jumlah yang dibelanjakan bagi tempoh yang sama pada 2008-2009.
Sektor awam Britain mengalami banyak pemotongan ketika kerajaan cuba menghapuskan defisit bajet.
Bendahara Ratu, Alan Reid berkata, kerabat diraja 'sedar tentang suasana ekonomi yang sukar sekarang' dan akan mengurangkan perbelanjaan serta menangguhkan kerja penyelenggaraan istana.
Elizabeth, 84, menerima peruntukan awam berjumlah 7.9 juta pound (RM39 juta) setahun bagi membayar gaji kakitangan dan kos lain, dan jumlah itu tidak bertambah sejak 20 tahun lalu.
Penyata akaun itu juga menunjukkan, Elizabeth mengeluarkan wang tambahan sebanyak 6.5 juta pound (RM31 juta) daripada sebuah dana rizab yang dikumpulkan sejak bertahun-tahun lalu dengan menyimpan sebahagian daripada bajet yang diperuntukkan kepada beliau.
Jika Ratu itu terus mengeluarkan wang daripada dana rizabnya pada kadar semasa, dana itu akan kehabisan wang menjelang tahun depan iaitu tahun beliau dijadual meraikan ulang tahun ke-60 menduduki takhta. - AP
