FIA bans reactive ride height for 2012
The reactive suspension system pioneered by Lotus has been banned for the 2012 season, according to reports.
Lotus hoped to steal a march on its rivals with the concept, that regulates ride height under braking, but sources emerged on Friday that the FIA sent a note to all teams that the device was no longer considered legal.
Ferrari was one team that was looking into the legalities of the device that was thought to have found a loophole in the regulations as it is reactive to brake torque and not driver activated.
But Williams chief operations engineer Mark Gillan was quoted on Friday night that he had received a note from the FIA saying that the system had been outlawed.
"The FIA has just banned that particular type of system," Gillan told The Flying Lap. "We have been investigating that type of system for a while. It obviously has an impact on the aero platform of the car, [and] anything that gets the front ride height lower is beneficial from an aerodynamic perspective."
Gillan was speaking straight after the FIA issued the directive, and confirmed that he had not had time to examine it fully.
Lotus will launch its 2012 challenger at 1700 CET on Sunday February 5 ahead of the Jerez test, the same day the team's new website will go live.
Kimi Raikkonen will then take to the wheel of the new car for the first two days of the pre-season test before handing over duties to team-mate Romain Grosjean for the remaining two days. |

2012 Season Changes
Compared to the major changes introduced for 2011 - DRS, KERS, Pirelli tyres etc. - those for the 2012 season may seem relatively minor. Some, however, will still have a significant impact…
No blown diffusers
The FIA is clamping down on engine mapping and exhaust positioning to minimise designers’ use of exhaust gases in a car’s aerodynamics, effectively outlawing blown diffusers.
Crash tests
There will be tougher side impact testing and new cars must now pass all required FIA crash tests prior to any on-track testing.
Safety car
During a safety-car period, all lapped cars will be allowed to unlap themselves and then join the back of the pack, ensuring a clean re-start without slower cars impeding those racing for the leading positions.
Driving etiquette
Drivers may no longer leave the track without a justifiable reason, i.e. cutting a chicane on reconnaissance laps or in-laps to save time and fuel, and drivers may no longer move back onto the racing line having moved off it to defend a position.
Race suspensions
There will now be a maximum race time of four hours to ensure that a lengthy suspension of a race does not result in a race that could run up to eight hours if left unregulated. Cars which were in the pit lane when the race was suspended will now be allowed to re-join the cars on the grid in the position they were in at the time of the race suspension.
Testing
In addition to the established pre-season tests, one three-day test will be carried out during the season. Formerly there was none.
Tyre allocation
All tyres allocated to a driver may now be used on the first day of practice. Formerly only three sets were permitted on the opening day of the Grand Prix weekend.

Changes to the 2012 Technical Regulations
- All engine standard ECU set up and control parameters, which were formerly contained only within a Technical Directive, are now contained within the relevant parts of the Technical Regulations.
- The exhaust tailpipes are now strictly regulated in order to ensure that the aerodynamic effect exhaust gases have on the car is kept to an absolute minimum.
- Better marking of in-car emergency switches operated by marshals are now stipulated.
- The side impact structures will now have to be subjected to a further (upward) push-off test.
Changes to the 2012 Sporting Regulations
- Cars may no longer take part in pre-season testing without having passed all crash tests.
- There will now be a maximum race time of four hours to ensure that a lengthy suspension of a race does not result in a race that could run up to eight hours if left unregulated.
- Before the safety car returns to the pits all lapped cars will be allowed to unlap themselves and then join the back of the pack, ensuring a clean re-start without slower cars impeding those racing for the leading positions.
- Cars which were in the pit lane when a race is suspended will now be allowed to re-join the cars on the grid in the position they were in when the race was suspended.
- Drivers may no longer leave the track without a justifiable reason, i.e. cutting a chicane on reconnaissance laps or ‘in’ laps to save time and fuel.
- Drivers may no longer move back onto the racing line having moved off it to defend a position.
- One three-day test will be carried out during the season, formerly there were none.
- All stewards’ decisions which are not subject to appeal are now in one place instead of being in various places within the regulations.
- All tyres allocated to a driver may now be used on the first day of practice; formerly only three sets were permitted.

Pirelli reveals new 2012 tyre markings
Pirelli has clearerer and modified tyre markings for the 2012 Formula 1 season. The identification colour of each Slick compound remains the same, although the text is somewhat bolder. For Intermediate and Wet compounds, a new Citurato range has been unveiled; Intermediates are now marked with bright green, with Wets being blue.
The 2012 tyres were unveiled in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, with Pirelli holding a press conference for members of the media. The Italian company explained that its tyre range has been entirely renewed in a bid to make them ‘even more competitive’ and encourage at least two pit-stops for each driver in every race. Each compound has been designed so that its colour marking is more visible when at speed.
The new tyres have a more angular profile, with each compound generally softer than its predecessor to compensate for the revised aerodynamic setups of the cars, not least varying downforce levels now that exhaust-blown diffusers are banned.
Dry weather Slicks keep their ‘PZero’ branding, although the revised Intermediate and Wet compounds are now labelled ‘Cinturato’ – as all Pirelli tyres were when the firm made its Formula 1 debut in 1951.
The tyre marking colours for 2012 are as follows:
Super Soft Red
Soft Yellow
Medium White
Hard Silver
Intermediate Green
Wet Blue
Pirelli became F1’s sole tyre supplier last year, taking over from Bridgestone. |

betul..itu risiko nye..
tujuan utama nak laju..tapi design2 macam ni lebih nak melanggar peraturan..
maybe la dalam keputusan meja bulat Lotus ni..design macam tu akan jadi legal..sama mcm difusser etc tu..
alih2 lain plak jadi..nasib la..Kalo Ferrari tak kisah la sbb team besar..resource pun berlambak2.. |

Peter Sauber has suggested that his team's new F1 challenger will feature a stepped nose similar to that seen on Caterham's CT01 when it was revealed last week.
New regulations, which limit the height of the car's nose for the season ahead, saw the Caterham feature a noticeable bump in the nose.
The new Sauber, named the C31, is set to feature a similar design at the front end with a number of teams expected to take the same approach to the new regulations.
“For reasons of aerodynamics, this step in the nose is almost inevitable," Sauber was quoted as telling Sonntagsblick.
Sauber also confirmed that the car will feature a new livery for the season ahead, which will be revealed when the car is launched at Jerez ahead of the first test of the year.
"All I can say is that the basic colour is white, but the overall impression is dark, with red,” he said. “In short, it is different. I remain a friend of the colour white, although often on television some cars cannot be well distinguished."
