Dyana Sofya bakal Giant Killer spt Nurul Izzah?
DAP’s Dyana Sofya to take on Gerakan president in Teluk Intan by-election
BY EILEEN NG
MAY 17, 2014
LATEST UPDATE: MAY 17, 2014 06:09 PM
Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud has been named the DAP candidate for the May 31 Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election. – The Malaysian Insider pic, May 17, 2014.
Political greenhorn Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud is the DAP candidate for the May 31 Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election, days after she was subjected to an online smear campaign.
She will be taking on Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong, whose candidature was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today.
The 27-year-old Perak-born lawyer edged out another potential candidate – experienced ceramah speaker Hew Kuan Yew, more popularly known by his moniker Superman due to his penchant for wearing shirts bearing the superhero's motifs and images.
The announcement was made by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng at the DAP operations centre today.
The political secretary to party veteran Lim Kit Siang is expected to face experienced Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong, who is the Gerakan president, in the by-election.
Earlier, Muhyiddin described Mah (pic, left) as the suitable candidate to represent BN as he was familiar with voters in the constituency.
"Although he lost in the last election, I feel this is the revival of the Gerakan," he said.
Mah, the former deputy minister for Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, was the Teluk Intan MP until 2008, having won the seat in the 1999 and 2004 general elections. In 2008, he lost to DAP's M. Manogaran, and to the late Seah Leong Peng in 2013.
The 53-year-old graduated from the London School of Economics and has a law degree from the University of East London.
The by-election in Teluk Intan was triggered by Seah’s death due to cancer on May 1.
By fielding Dyana, DAP is aiming to shed its Chinese-centric image and woo the Malay voters in the constituency, which formed nearly 39% of the total 60,349 voters.
“The racial barrier must be destroyed so that a new Malaysia can arise,” she said at the operations centre today.
“As a Malay-Muslim, I will surely uphold these two identities.”
The seat has 23,301 Malay voters (38.6%), 25,310 Chinese voters (41.9%) and 11,468 Indian voters (19%).
Nomination for the by-election is on May 19 and early voting on May 27.
Days after Dyana was said to be a potential candidate for the Perak seat, several blogs published pictures of a woman clad in a pink bikini, claiming it was Dyana, and questioned her character as a Muslim.
After the pictures went viral, some social media users had said they were not of Dyana, but that of Filipina actress Pauleen Luna.
Several DAP leaders and political analysts had spoken out against the smear attacks, speculating that those responsible for them were BN cybertroopers.
They had said those who were out to discredit Dyana were unable to comprehend the fact that a Malay would want to be associated with a Chinese-majority opposition party like the DAP.
Dyana had shrugged off the attacks which she said she had expected the moment she decided to join DAP.
“So to my detractors, I wish to paraphrase Katy Perry. You will hear me ‘roar!’” she said, borrowing a line from the pop singer’s hit single “Roar”.
The DAP first won the seat, then known as Teluk Anson, in the 1969 parliamentary election when Chan Fu King defeated then MCA Minister for Health Dr Ng Kam Poh in one of the major upsets.
However, since the redelineation of the parliamentary constituencies in 1974, 1984 and 1993, the constituency of Teluk Anson in 1969 had changed with regard to the composition and character of its voters – allowing Gerakan candidates to win the seat continuously from 1974 until the 1995 general election when M. Kula Segaran broke the DAP’s losing streak. – May 17, 2014.
