National diver Muhammad Syafiq Puteh is grateful that his mother's (Masrinda Abu) prayers while performing the haj recently were answered when he managed to win silver with Gabriel Gilbert Daim in the men's 3-metre (m) springboard synchronised final at Birmingham 2020 here.
He admitted that he never expected to contribute the first medal for the national diving camp at the quadrennial Games here after realising that their degree of difficulty was lower than that of their challengers.
"Of course, I am happy. Never expected to finish second and get on the podium this time. Alhamdulillah Allah SWT answered my mother's prayer.
"I really can't believe I got a medal. I met my mother a day before leaving for Birmingham. At that time, she had just returned from performing the haj," a tearful Muhammad Syafiq told reporters after the medal presentation ceremony.
Meanwhile, Gabriel, 21, was lost for words when he found out that they had finished second.
"We came into the Games as underdogs... I don't know what else to say, I'm speechless," he said.
Gabriel-Muhammad Syafiq accumulated 376.77 points after six dives at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre here.
England's Anthony Harding-Jack David Laugher (438.33 points) clinched gold while Australia's Samuel Fricker-Li Shixin (374.52 points) settled for bronze.

Nur Dhabitah Sabri and Ng Yan Yee combined to deliver a silver medal in the women's synchronised three-metre springboard event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The pair registered 299.85 points to finish behind Rio 2016 bronze winners Maddison Keenye and Anabelle Luce Smith (316.53 points) and fend off a strong challenge from Canada's Margo Erlam and Mia Vallée (297.00 points).
It was Malaysia's second medal in diving events after Gabriel Gilbert Daim and Syafiq Puteh also won a silver medal in the men's three-metre springboard final.
On a personal level, it was the first Commonwealth Games silver medal for Dhabitah, who won three bronze in the last two editions, while Ng became a first-time medallist.

Malaysian rhythmic gymnast Ng Joe Ee erased her earlier disappointment at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after winning a gold medal in the ball event on Saturday.
The 16-year-old scored 29.700 points to finish ahead of Canada's Suzanna Shahbazlan (29.050 points) and Anna Sokolova (28.800 points) of Cyprus, delivering Malaysia's fifth gold medal in Birmingham.
The success couldn't taste any sweeter for Ng after she finished fourth in the team event with Izzah Amzan and Koi Sie Yan, and fifth in the individual all-around final.
In doing so, she helped the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) meet its target of winning at least one gold medal in this edition.
Ng also became the third Malaysian rhythmic gymnast to win an individual Commonwealth Games gold medal after Elaine Koon (2010) and Amy Kwan (2018).
Meanwhile, Izzah also got her medal breakthrough as the 21-year-old clinched a bronze medal in the clubs event.
