DEOLS TO BOOST HOCKEY IMAGE

Bollywood stars now entering into sports too. Earlier, many of them got involved in politic though. Now, they are ready to give hockey an image through the Premier Hockey League (PHL). India's midfielder Viren Rasquinha will share frames with Bollywood's Deols -- Sunny and Bobby - during the promotional campaign that will be shot in the next few days in Mumbai. This is the first campaign of its kind in Indian hockey and it is expected to play a vital role in building up the hype around PHL, which will be launched at Hyderabad on January 13th. Sunny Deol has informed organisers that he was more interested in rooting for the Sher-e-Jalandhar team, which will be led by India striker from Punjab, Gagan Ajit Singh.

In the run-up to the mega event, Sher-e-Jalandhar will also have celebrity support, in the form of cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who is based in Jalandhar. The Indian off-spinner will express his solidarity with the Gagan's team in promotional campaigns that will be organised in Jalandhar in the next couple of days.

The host team, Hyderabad Sultans, may also rope in a few top Telugu stars, who will help in gathering the crowds. Pulella Gopichand will be part of the launch of the 'Road Show' in the Deccan city on Januaury 8. PHL is planning to take the show to three other cities - Delhi, Mumbai and Jalandhar, according to the organizers.

SRK returns to small screen

Shah Rukh Khan, who started his career from the small screen and reached at the top of the Silver screen, is now returning to television again. He has done this after a lapse of fourteen years, and that too during his holiday with family in Dubai. It is said that he is making up his mind to work on Sahara One Channel's serials. In this connection he has already met with Sahara people. He may be doing a role on 'Kareena Kareena' show. This has however upset a number of producers in Mumbai who are planning to sign him for their movies.

AISH BREAKS HER KASAM IN 'SHABD'

In the wake of the modern trend of body exposure and sexy scenes overtaking the Hindi film industry, even internationally acclaimed Indian actress Aishwarya Rai has not been able to remain untouched from it, and has perforce joined the mainstream. This is evident from the hottest scenes she has enacted in her latest movie titled 'Shabd'. According to informed sources, Aish has thus broken her vow of not doing such scenes in Indian films, what may come. She is reported to have sizzled with both of her heroes in the movie starring Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan.

The world beauty who declined to compromise with her ex-boyfriend-cum-top star Salman Khan for the latter's obsession for her, has now given a very hot and lingering kissing scene with Sanjay Dutt. This may be most frustrating for Salman Khan though. Aish has justly realized that her status in Bollywood would be adversely affected if she continued to follow the conventional thin line of demarcation between the old and the new trend in the film industry. And, it seems that wisdom has prevailed on her to agree to do in Bollywood what she has been doing in Hollywood!

'I'm ready to challenge Aishwarya'

Despite cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, Aishwarya Rai could still be facing a threat from across the border. According to Meera, she would make a better Umrao Jaan than Ash.

"I believe she (Aishwarya) is playing Umraon Jaan in a film. I also have an offer for a similar role, but we are still looking for a producer. I am ready to throw an open challenge - I will make a much better Umrao Jaan than her. I am sexier than Ash. Unfortunately we don't have beauty pageants in Pakistan, otherwise no one could have stopped me from winning the Miss World crown. In fact I really wish that we get the same role in different films so that I can show I am prettier, sexier and more glamorous than her," says the Pak beauty who grabbed headlines for a purported kissing scene in her debut film Nazar.

Meera, who recently turned brand ambassador for an Indian company, insists she didn't have problems shooting an ad in a bikini. "I feel proud of my well-shaped body when I am wearing a swimsuit. I think I am glamorous and charming. So why should I hesitate to go before the camera in a swimsuit?" she contends.

According to the actress, Indian directors need to be more imaginative while offering her roles: "Till date only Maheshji (Bhatt) has been able to understand me fully. I am not someone who can be portrayed only as a sexy doll. I can do different kinds of roles and in many different ways. I am sure I will live up to the expectations of anyone who offers me something innovative. For example, I have great expectations from my next film Kasak. It has every element that Indian cinema needs. I believe I have great prospects in Bollywood, provided I am utilised in a very different manner."

And Meera is ready to do just about anything in her quest for celluloid fame in India - even take on Aishwarya in a film.

"I would love to work with her. It would be a great opportunity to shatter the myth that she's the queen of Bollywood," she quips.

Shah Rukh and Ajay as sambandhi

Shah Rukh Khan, who once paired with Karol in several films and made them all hit at box office, has not forgotten Kajol so far. This is despite the fact that Ajay Devgan doesn't feel very happy in the company of Shah Rukh. This is paining SRK. He is always looking forward to create very cordial relations between the two families. Recently, at a party he spoke to Kajol, and wished if his son Aryan could marry Kajol's daughter Nyasa. Yes, this marriage would bring the two families closer to each other for generations. However, SRK said this to Kajol when her husband Ajay Devgan wasn't there. After all, Ajay's consent is vital in this matter.

Juhi Chawla on TV ads

Famous Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla seems to have entered into the small screen in a big way. She is seen these days in her Mughal period dress of the 'Mughal-e-Azam' fame along with the movie's character of emperor Akbar. She would also be seen in another ad saying 'Dena is our matured Bank'. This is presumably due to the fact that Dena Bank has appointed her its brand ambassador. After the Big B and 'Khiladi' star Akshay Kumar, Juhi will be added to this series. Anil Khandelwal, Dena Bank's Managing Director confesses that he is also a big fan of former Miss India who has acted in several hit films.

Pitt Keen to Hook Up with Cruise's Ex PR Guru
By WENN
............................................
Brad Pitt is trying to sign up Tom Cruise's former public relations guru Pat Kingsley as he plans a press onslaught about his romance with Angelina Jolie.
The movie star is reportedly keen to tell all about his private life after spending years shying away from personal matters, and he wants Kingsley to help mastermind his upcoming TV appearances and magazine interviews.

A source says, "Brad's set to go public about his loving relationship with Angelina, but wants the event handled carefully and executed strategically. He knows Pat's perfect for the job."

Cruise mysteriously sacked his longtime PR pal Kingsley last year and put his sister Lee Anne DeVette in charge of his press affairs. Neither the movie star nor Kingsley have spoken about the split.

AMRITA RAO SHEDDING SOME OF HER INHIBITIONS

Amrita Rao, who played Ajay Devgan's love interest in 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh', is a unique actress in many ways, as Smashits found out after a tete-a-tete with her.

Which was your debut film?

I started my career with 'Ab Ke Baras'.

What's your impression of industry?

Well, I faced camera for the first time for the portfolio session. I was not uneasy, as I had done this earlier for my ad films.

How did you feel during the shooting of 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'?

It was fantastic to work with a top star like Ajay Devgan. He is not as shy as he appears to be. I felt at ease with him. One can learn a lot from stars if one wants. My performance in this film owes a lot to what I learned from him.

Are you averse to unconventional scenes in movies?

Yes, I don't like kissing in films. Some directors use such scenes only to exploit them commercially. I am averse to such things.

Would you object to acting in romantic scenes?

In the beginning I felt uneasy about acting in such scenes due to my upbringing and education. Perhaps, this was because of my background, for I had studied in a girls only institution. That is why I kept my distance from boys. In films, however, one has to shed some of one's hesitation.

But you don't shy away from wearing modern dresses unlike many new entrants?

No, I have worn western clothes in 'Ab Ke Baras' and do not feel uneasy about it. But I don't like clothes that make one look vulgar.

Do you think there is sex exploration in films?

No, I don't think so. Since the producers invest huge money in their ventures, they will not like to take risk by indulging in sex explortation. However, it may be possible that some body in the industry may exploit extras hired for small roles.

Do you have offers to work in films from the South?

Yes, I get a lot of offers but decline them. How can I work in films from the South when I cannot converse in the concerned tongues? Hence, I prefer Hindi movies.

Where do you rank among today's actresses?

I know I am a newcomer. I may have acted well, but I do not think in terms of competing with my contemporaries. I want to confine myself to my performance and do my best.

SANJAY KAPOOR IN NO RUSH TO GET HIS DESSERTS

Boney and Anil Kapoor's younger brother, Sanjay Kapoor, is a very talented actor. He is one person who can breathe life into any story with his mature acting. He has put in decent performances in films like 'Kartavya', 'Raja', 'Beqabu', 'Mere Sapno Ki Rani', 'Mohabbat', 'Sirf Tum' and 'Chuppa Rustam'. Sanjay, who tried his hand at playing a villain in the box office disaster, 'Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche', has now opted for a murder mystery in 'Soch'. In a short time, Sanjay impressed producer Dr Vijahat Kareem and director Sushen Bhatnagar, who reposed there confidence in him and assigned him their first movie without any hitch. Some excerpts of his talks recently.

What's you role in 'Soch'?

I play a film star.

What is Raveena's role in the film?

Raveena plays a married woman who is very friendly with the character I play. My screen wife (Aditi Gowitrikar) gets suspicious about the relationship, disrupting relations between us. Then my wife is killed.

How did you find working with Raveena for the first time?

Very nice. We have known each other for quite some time. Both of us had signed for a film earlier but it never materialised. But I am happy that I got an opportunity to work with her in 'Soch'.

How do you say the story is nice?

I play the role of a filmstar (Raj Mathew) and Aditi Gowatrikar plays as my wife (Mahulika Raj). Raj has a flirtatious streak and Mahulika is suspicious of his closeness to Preeti (Raveena). Raveena plays the choreographer-turned-director in whose film Raj is acting. Although she has a soft corner for Raj, being a true professional, she keeps her distance from him. She is often referred to as the 'other woman' in Raj's life. The story takes an unexpected turn with the mysterious death of Mahulika (my wife).

What are your expectations from the film?

I am sure the viewers will like 'Soch'. For me this film is very important.

How do you evaluate new director Sushan?

Oh, he is wonderful. He belongs to the new generation of directors and has had formal training in his craft at the Film Institute of Pune.

Tell us something about your family?

As you know, I am married to Maheep Sandhu and have a lovely daughter, Shayana, who is the most important girl in my life. My family accompanies me on my shootings abroad. Fatherhood has made me happy and content.

Sirf Tum and Chhupa Rustam did well at the box office but you did not get the credit?

I am not bitter on that score. I am patient. So many actors have witnessed mercurial growth but haven't lasted long.

Have any offer at present?

I am not flooded with offers despite the success of these two films, but I am sure that I will get what is due to me.

Did you benefit from the presence of your brothers in the industry?

Luckily I have a very close-knit family. That makes me confident. But my brothers don't advise me every day nor do we sit at the dining table planning. I just know that they are there to support me. That has helped me a great deal.

KABHI KHUSHI, KABHI GHAM - SAYS GOVINDA

Govinda is popular both with his heroines and his directors because of his simple nature and lack of ego. This 'man with the Midas touch' might be going through a tough patch at the moment but feels that it is only temporary. A philosophical Govinda says, "Who knows what is in store for us? I try my best and work as hard as I always have. Things go well for you sometimes, and sometimes they don't."

Has the failure of 'Akhiyon Se Goli Maare' affected you?

Anything that affects my career has to affect me too. I too am worried about fame and success. Success can sometimes be blinding and rob one of one's vision. But I can take failure in my stride

How do you propose to rectify the situation?

When I entered the film industry, I had no career to speak of. I created it. If I have to start from scratch again, I will not be apprehensive about it. The trick lies in turning things to your advantage; also in waiting for your fortune to change for the better. One advantage, though, when you are less popular is that less people come to meet you and you get to spend more time with your family. There is also more time for introspection, for analyzing where and why you have gone wrong and start rectifying things.

Does the fault lie in failing to reinvent yourself?

No. If I'm continuing to do something, there must be a good reason for it. I'm not a fool. If today I'm concentrating on comedy, it's because I have been successful at it for the last 11 years.

What about being stuck with an image?

Why is it that only I am accused of being stuck with an image? Even Shah Rukh is stuck with a 'romantic image' and does only lover boy roles. Last year, I had a 'Jodi No1'. And this year is far from over yet. Of course, I'm not saying that I'll continue doing comedy forever. Those in the industry who feel that I'm a very insecure person couldn't be further from the truth.

Do you regret having turned down the role of Chunnilal in 'Devdas'?

No. I have no regrets. What critical acclaim would I have got? The role had nothing substantial to offer. It didn't excite me.

Are you arrogant?

When someone comes to me saying that because he is a big director I should be happy doing such and such a role for him, I don't buy it. Sanjay Leela Bhansali wasn't doing me a favour. I would, however, do a role if a director came to me for help or if we struck up a rapport. I would do it even at the cost of my ego. I'm not an arrogant.

Who harmed you most?

None of my friends have ever harmed me. Relationships, friendship and money - these three things have always motivated me. How can flops that are attributed to friends harm your career? If I am not on the top rung for some time, so what?

Who are your director-friends?

Directors like David Dhawan, Lawrence D'Souza, Ravi Krishnamurthy and Pranlal Mehta are my friends and I owe a lot of my hits to them. Friendship does pay, if it is genuine. As far as Manoj is concerned, maybe his first film, 'Pardesi Babu', might not have done well, but his second film, 'Hadh Kardi Aapne', was the only film that earned money for my distribution company.

Did you refuse Shyam Benegal's film because it was not a comedy?

This is all rubbish. I would love to do serious film with Shyam Benegal. I respect and admire his films. The real reason why I did not do the film was because my character was based on a real-life character, still alive, and I did not want to hurt anyone's feelings.

KARISHMA EXCITED ABOUT ROLE IN 'SHAKTI'

Karishma Kapoor, who was in New Delhi recently to promote her film 'Shakti' (Power), says that it is based on the Hollywood film 'Not Without My Daughter' and also partly on the Telugu box office hit 'Anthapuram'. Sridevi was originally supposed to star in the film but the role came Karishma's way, as the former happened to be in the family way. Boney Kapoor called up Karishma and asked her whether she would like to do the role, and says Karishma, "I was very excited and jumped at the opportunity."

Karishma considers this film as being one up on 'Fiza' and 'Zubeidaa'. It is the story of a woman who has to fight to keep her child and her identity, battling against the powerful forces of patriarchy. It was an emotionally exhausting and physically draining film, Ms. Kapoor said in a tete-a-tete. :

Do you prefer offbeat films?

Yes, I prefer doing offbeat films. When I signed 'Fiza', apart from Tabu and me, no mainstream actress wanted to do offbeat films. Now, doing offbeat films has become fashionable. But you seldom get to see genuine offbeat films these days.

What are your memories of 'Not Without My Daughter?

I saw the film when I was 12 or 13 and recall being fascinated by it.

What was the story line?

The story is about an American housewife (Betty Mahmoody) who is kidnapped and imprisoned by her Iranian husband.

How did you bag 'Shakti'?

Sridevi was initially supposed to play the role and even Kajol was approached. Then, out of the blue, I got a call from Boney Kapoor saying that since Sridevi was pregnant, would I like to do the role? I jumped at the opportunity. I think I was destined to do the film.

How do you think the film will fare?

Whatever the fate of the film, I'm confident my role will make an impact.

How was it shooting for this film?

No other film till date has demanded so much of me emotionally and physically. I spent 14-15 hours in the deserts of Rajasthan and had to run for long distances with a six-year old child in my arms.

Do you regret having rejected Mani Ratnam's 'Bombay'?

No, I never have any regrets. I never take on more work than I can handle. If I have survived for 12 years, it is because I am dedicated to my work.

What other films do you have on hand?

'Rishtey', 'Baaz' and 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'.

Have you signed any regional film?

I have recently signed a film, 'Kotiswaran' of well-known director Kunjuman.

Why did you sign this movie? Any significant background behind it?

Yes. Director Kunjuman is very excited with my role of a girl coming from another planet and doing an item song in this movie. He says this item song will help the movie hit the box office. This song will also be on the lips of everybody. The director is making a spaceship costing lacks of rupees to picturise this song.

Any morale from Shakti?

No mother will accept the situations shown in the film. I respect my mother more now and I realise what parents go through to protect their children.

Karisma's husband receives extortion threat

The Delhi Police has registered a case following a complaint by Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor's estranged husband Sunjay Kapur that he has received extortion threats via e-mail on Friday evening, demanding 50 Crore Rupees.

"We have registered a case and are carrying out investigations," Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said today.

The noted industrialist Kapur said in his complaint that he has been receiving these threats regularly from anonymous callers from last few weeks. However, initially, he ignored them, but took the matter seriously after receiving an e-mail, in which Sunjay was clearly warned that he would be killed, if he id not pay the money.

The e-mail also told Kapur that he could inform the police at his own peril.

Kapur has not named anybody in his complaint. Police sources admitted the possibility of involvement of any person who knows Sunjay but refused to link the matter with Karisma, saying that it will be to early to say anything.

Kapur, currently involved in a quarrel with actress Karisma Kapoor over the custody of their five-months old daughter Samiara, had petitioned the Delhi High Court seeking to prevent his wife from taking Samiara out of the country, following which Karisma has filed an affidavit accusing Sunjay of 'deserting' her.

"Sunjay has made no financial contribution to the upkeep of the child and the prenatal, delivery and postnatal care of the mother," she said.

Sanjay Kapur has urged a court to authorise him as the natural guardian of his and his estranged wife's 4-month-old daughter.

The court issued an interim order saying Samiara could not travel overseas without her father's permission.

Karisma had stopped acting two years ago after marrying Delhi based businessman Sunjay Kapur. She was married to Kapur after breaking off an engagement with Bollywood leading man Abhishek Bachchan.

Saif parties with girlfriend, sisters

Saif Ali Khan, who was recently in the news for his separation from his wife Amrita Singh, reached New Delhi on December 31st morning from his tour to Dubai. His Italian girlfriend Rosa accompanied him. The junior Nawab was spotted at the airport by his co-passengers and cheered. However, most of the passengers coming from Dubai were not aware of his new girl find.

Perhaps, they were missing Amrita Singh! We followed the lovebirds and later traced them later enjoying the New Year eve at Olive Bar and Kitchen and Bricks in Greater Kailash Part-I. Interestingly, Saif Ali was partying with girlfriend Rosa and his sisters Soha and Saba. It appears that the brother had traveled from Dubai to Delhi to console his sister Soha Ali whose debut movie 'Dil Maange More' exhibited at theatres the same day failed to enthuse the Khan family.

Not only the movie flopped, but also the critics were not happy with Soha Ali's performance in the movie. Saif's high hopes were dashed to the ground. Earlier in the day, Soha was seen excited as her movie was to release that very day but was nervous too as she was waiting for the response of the audience and the critics. She shared her views with the media, especially in regard to the publication of news concerning Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor lip locking at a restaurant near Mumbai. She sympathized with Kapoors, and said that she enjoyed working with Shahid in their 'Dil Maange More'.

About her forthcoming movies, Soha informed that she is acting in David Dhawan's 'Shaadi No 1', Ritesh Shetty's 'Gustakh Dil' and Rituparno Ghosh's 'Antar Mahal'. Besides, she is busier in Bangla films at present than in Hindi movies.

The party went well until early hours next day in the company of several socialites. The club was decorated with lanterns. The organizer said that the theme of the party was Club Carnival. They stated that a part of the proceeds of the night would go to Reef Watch, an NGO busy in doing relief work for Tsumani victims in the Andamans.

PRIYANSHU TURNS A LOSER

Priyanshu Chatterjee who shot to fame in his debut 'Tum Bin' under the banner of T-Series, is now in trouble. He has been suffering these days both in his career as well as in his personal life. He is living alone, while his wife Malini Sharma is occupying his house. Malini Sharma played a ghost in Vikram Bhatt's 'Raaz' and won the hearts of the audience. However, after Priyanshu's 'Tum Bin' she pressurized Priyanshu for a divorce though the latter got many film offers, including 'Dil Ka Rishta' an Aish Production, starring Aishwarya Rai.

Priyanshu was very excited to get a chance to act with world famous star like Aish coupled with actor Arjun Rampal. Then Priyanshu played an important role in 'Pinjar' though the movie was a flop, commercially. Later, he acted in 'Julie', which became popular due to the body exposures of Neha Dhupia in the movie. However, Priyanshu didn't get any credit in the movie's popularity. Moreover, his next two 'Koi Mere Dil Main Hai' and 'Madhoshi' turned flops ruining his filmi career. As a result, the producers and the directors do not visit him now.

Rani's no to Mira

offered her lead role. The sources say that Rani declined Mira's offer because there is a nude scene in the movie. Second, Mira offered her very low fee for this movie. But Rani has blasted the myth and said that there is no nude scene in the movie. Besides, she says that the fee is not a problem. But the reason, Rani says, is that she had already signed Karan Johar's forthcoming movie before getting an offer from Mira. Moreover, the dates, which Mira wanted, are clashing with Karan's. So, she had to decline the Mira's proposal.

Manisha stops dubbing

Nepalese actress Manisha Koirala has refused to lend her voice for her upcoming release 'Chaahat - Ek Nasha'. She said this while holidaying in Goa. It is reliably learnt that the actual reason for Manisha's non-cooperation is that the producer has still to pay her Rs six lakh from her total remuneration of Rs 50 lakh. The problem originated when some distributors refused to register the film in their territories as Manisha owed distributors Rs 6 lakh for her last year film 'Paisa Vasool'. And the producer of 'Chaahat - Ek Nasha' has adjusted that amount out of Manisha's fees.

ANIL KAPOOR FACES CAREER CRISIS

Anil Kapoor, a top star of yesteryears, is passing through a crisis of his career. Anil is the star who was once compared with his contemporary Amitabh Bachchan. However, the producers and the directors have now stopped approaching him with new movie offers. While Amitabh even at the age of 62 has plenty of assignments, Anil is anxiously waiting for work. Though Anil is currently busy in 'Bewafa' and 'No Entry' besides 'Kaya', he has no other movie on hand. Anil is unlucky inasmuch as the credit for the success of 'Musafir' has gone in favor of Sanjay Dutt though Anil's performance has been widely appreciated.

This has marred his career a lot. His good friend Feroz Nadiadwala has ousted him from his 'Deewane Huye Paagal'. Feroz has first offered this movie to Anil, but in view of 'Musafir' credit going to Sanjay, has not replaced Anil with Khiladi Akshay Kumar. It is said in industry circles that Feroz is the best person to taste the box office. Since Feroz has denied chance in his own movie to Anil, it means Anil's movie might not hit at the box office.

Abhishek thrilled

Abhishek Bachchan is very much excited these days, as he has been signed on for a lead role in 'Dhoom Part II'. Besides, he is going to make a record by acting in three movies with his father. Since Shaad Ali, the director of his 'Bunty and Babli', asked Abhishek to sing a qawwali in his own voice along with Big B, the junior Bachchan was thrilled. He was all the more happy to know that never before has any pair of a father and a son ver sung a qawwali in Bollywood.
