Rossi prepares for emotional Yamaha farewell

Valentino Rossi will depart Fiat Yamaha after this weekend’s season-ending Grand Prix of Valencia. Having picked up four titles with the Japanese team between 2004 and 2009, the Italian now hopes to sign off with race victory in Spain.

Rossi will head to Ducati next year as a MotoGP paddock shuffle also sees Ben Spies move to partner Jorge Lorenzo as Casey Stoner switches to Honda from Ducati.

“So here we are, my last race with Yamaha and it will be an emotional weekend for all!” said Rossi. “Of course I would really like to try to win this final race because it would be a great end to this partnership, which has had so many beautiful moments.

“We improved the setting of our bike again in Estoril so I hope we will be in good shape in Valencia, although it hasn't been the best track for me in the last few years.

“Anyway, this is a special weekend so we will do everything that we can. I am third in the championship after Estoril and second is not impossible, although we know Dani (Pedrosa) is strong in Valencia and he is still 19 points ahead.”

Meregalli to replace Brivio at Yamaha

The factory Yamaha team has announced that Valentino Rossi Team Manager Davide Brivio will be leaving the outfit after this weekend’s season-ending race in Valencia; having spent two decades with the Japanese company, he will be replaced by Massimo Meregalli.

After being part of Yamaha for 19 years, be it in MotoGP or as the firm’s World Superbike Team Manager, Brivio bows out on Sunday:

‘Yamaha would like to express its sincere thanks and appreciation for the long collaboration and specifically for his involvement in the highly successful partnership with Valentino Rossi over the past seven years,’ reads a company statement. ‘We wish Davide all the best for the future.

‘At the same time we would also like to inform you of the appointment of Massimo "Maio") Meregalli, who will join the Yamaha Factory MotoGP Team in the role of Team Director.

Maio joins the MotoGP Team as a next step in his successful career to date with Yamaha as Team Manager of the Yamaha Motor Italia Supersport Team and, more recently, as Team Manager of the championship-winning Yamaha World Superbike Team.’

Meregalli will commence his new role on Monday 8 November – a day on which further details will be revealed by the team - in preparation for 2011 testing.

Ducati farewell for Stoner at Valencia

After four years with the Bologna factory the Australian rides his final race with the Ducati Team in this weekend’s season-ending GP.

After four years, 41 podiums and 23 victories (so far) and a World Championship title the Ducati Team bids farewell to Casey Stoner this weekend in the final round of the 2010 season at Valencia.

The 25 year-old will be aiming to sign off with one more victory and having won at Valencia in 2008 on the Desmosedici, Stoner is confident of finding a good set-up on his machine for Round 18.

“After the awful weather we had to put up with in Portugal I hope that Valencia is a bit better and we get chance to work well and get a good set-up for my final race on the Ducati,” said Stoner.

“I have always liked the circuit and I had my first ever win here in 125cc. It is a tight but flowing circuit and even though there are a lot of second and third gear corners they are banked and you can let the bike run, keeping some good speed up. This also helps you to find a gearbox setting quite quickly because apart from the straight, obviously, you only really need two gears. In the past we have always been able to find a good set-up so I we are confident. I really want to have a good race this weekend.”

Team Manager Vittoriano Guareschi said: “I really hope that at Valencia we get the conditions that allow everybody to work properly in all four sessions so that we can give Casey a bike and a setting that can give him the best possible chance to end our fantastic time together in positive fashion on Sunday. Our bike tends to work really well at this circuit and on Friday we'll be starting out with a setting that we know has worked well for us and been competitive in the last few races. Both Casey and Nicky (Hayden) love the track and have had some great results there in the past so I think there's a chance they could both be on the podium.”

2010 season finale in Valencia

The 18th and final round of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship this weekend will see the runner-up spot decided, with the following Official Test offering an immediate taste of what is to come in 2011.

The Ricardo Tormo Circuit hosts the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana this weekend for the 12th year running, and what has since 2002 been the traditional season-ending round. The 18th instalment of the 2010 MotoGP campaign will see runner-up to already-crowned Champion Jorge Lorenzo decided, with Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi the candidates still able to take the honour.

Despite having wrapped up the title with three rounds to spare Lorenzo is still hungry for victories, as proven with his eighth of the season last time out at Estoril. The Fiat Yamaha rider is also on course to set a new record for the highest number of points scored in a single season in the MotoGP class as well as equal a number of other milestones, with the added incentive that Valencia is just one of three circuits on the current calendar at which he has not won in any class. He did finish on the podium last year however and will now aim to go one better.

The man with the most success at the venue is Pedrosa, last year’s race winner and with five victories in total across the premier (twice), 250cc (twice) and 125cc classes. The Repsol Honda rider currently has the best chance of finishing second in the Championship, holding a 19-point advantage over third-placed Rossi, but he is still recovering from his collarbone injury having only made his return to racing in Portugal having sat out three races.

Rossi has winning form at Valencia from 2003 and 2004, but is yet to taste victory on an 800cc machine there. The Italian, along with Lorenzo, will be aiming to deliver Yamaha their first win in the format, and came close last year in finishing second.

Leading Ducati rider in the standings Casey Stoner took his first GP win at Valencia in the 125cc class back in 2003, and in 2008 the Australian won from pole. Along with Rossi he will be looking for an end-of-season victory to bring the latest chapter in his premier class career to a winning close, whilst just behind him in the standings Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) will be aiming to snatch fourth spot.

Rookie of the Year Ben Spies is desperate to ride despite dislocating an ankle last weekend in Portugal, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider keen to depart the satellite team for the factory set-up with what would be a third podium of his debut season. He placed seventh as a one-off entry in last year’s race, and level on points in the Championship is fellow American Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) who will also be searching for a rostrum finale to 2010. The Kentucky Kid was fifth last year in his first ride at the track on a Desmosedici, and has fond memories of clinching the 2006 title there.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) came agonisingly close to a first premier class podium at Estoril and will aim to seal that at a track he won on in 2008, his 250cc title-winning year, while LCR Honda’s French rider Randy de Puniet will mark a personal milestone with his 200th Grand Prix start. Carlos Checa also rides in his second race with the Pramac Racing team, and the three-practice session format used at Estoril will again be implemented this weekend.

With a day’s rest on Monday the preparations for the 2011 season will get underway on Tuesday and Wednesday following the GP, with the Official two-day Test scheduled to take place.

Dovizioso and Repsol contracts renewed at Honda

The Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has revealed that MotoGP team title sponsor Repsol has signed a new two-year contract. Monday’s announcement also confirms that Andrea Dovizioso will remain on-board in 2011 to form a three-bike line-up alongside Dani Pedrosa and new arrival Casey Stoner.

The statement rekindles a piece of history for the Japanese team, which last ran three riders – Mick Doohan, Alex Crivillé and Shinichi Ito - when it joined forces with Spanish oil and gas company Repsol back in 1995.

“We are delighted to announce that our valued partners at Repsol will once again join us in our quest for the MotoGP World Championship next year,” comments team President Tetsuo Suzuki.

“Honda’s partnership with Repsol has been long and successful and we are very proud to be together again for this challenge into the future. We are also very pleased to expand the Repsol Honda Team to once again include three riders next year.

“Our current riders Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso will be joined by Casey Stoner, all racing in Repsol Honda colours, to form a truly formidable line-up that we believe can fight for victory at every race and achieve our joint goals, recapturing all three MotoGP World Championship titles.”

Rossi ‘happy’ with last Yamaha podium

Valentino Rossi finished on a MotoGP rostrum as a Yamaha rider for the last time on Sunday, coming home third in the Valencian Grand Prix behind team-mare Jorge Lorenzo and the man he will replace at Ducati next year, Casey Stoner.

“Honestly, I'm happy with this final result with Yamaha because we had a difficult weekend here,” said the Italian. “I didn't get a good start but I realised straight away that I was much faster today and that my bike felt good.

“At one point I thought I might be able to win but in the later part of the race I just didn't have enough strength to stay with Lorenzo and Stoner.

“This is a very hard track when you're not completely fit; I started to make a few mistakes because I didn't have enough power to stop the bike, so after a bit I decided it was better to slow down and keep my third place.

“Finishing on the podium was my way of saying thank you to my bike, to Yamaha and to all the people who have worked with me in these seven seasons. It's been a great experience and I have enjoyed it so much. 46 is a great number of wins - of course I wanted more but I think I can be happy with what I have done here.

“We have finished the season strongly, with five podiums in a row, and after such a difficult season we can feel happy about how we have ended.

“It's been a wonderful seven years, great fun with a special atmosphere, many fantastic victories and four World Championships.

"I stopped with my bike after the race today just like I did at Welkom when this story began (2004) - it was the right way to say goodbye to ‘her'.

"Thank you to everyone, we have wonderful memories.”

Rossi enjoys maiden laps at Ducati as Lorenzo leads

Less than 48 hours after the conclusion of the 2010 MotoGP season the 2011 preparations began at Valencia on Tuesday. Valentino Rossi completed his first day in action at Ducati in black and yellow. The Italian saw his Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo finish on top of the time sheets.

The 2010 World Champion was quickest ahead of Casey Stoner (Honda) and new Yamaha team-mate Ben Spies. Valentino Rossi made his much-awaited Ducati debut, whilst British rookie Cal Crutchlow continued his adaptation to MotoGP.

Assuming top spot on the timesheet at the Ricardo Tormo circuit as he had done on the podium on Sunday was factory Yamaha rider and 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo, who led the 17-strong field of riders with a best time of 1’32.012 from 48 laps on his M1 machine – a little over two-tenths of a second off Casey Stoner’s pole position time from the weekend.

“Today has been a great day, we tried a new chassis for 2011 and while it doesn’t seem better it’s not worse. The most improved thing has been the Öhlins suspension, which gave me more confidence especially mid-corner. The new engine seems to make the bike wheelie less too,” said Lorenzo.

“Tomorrow we will concentrate on confirming everything and understanding whether every new part is an improvement or not, and go over everything.”

Stoner was one of the enthusiastically awaited debutants of the Test as he rode the factory Repsol Honda machine for the first time, clocking in with the second fastest time of the day at +0.763s on Lorenzo’s time. He was just a tenth outside his own FP3 time from the weekend.

Stoner was comparing a new 2011 chassis against that of the 2010 one used by his new team-mate Dani Pedrosa as he completed 44 laps, and the Spaniard was just over a tenth of a second further back in fourth position as he worked on the same aspects as Stoner with HRC’s aim being the selection of a direction to take for their 2011 frame. Pedrosa, who completed 35 laps, had limited track time due to an electronic issue and is also still recovering from his broken collarbone.

Sandwiched between the Honda riders and in third position was Ben Spies who started work in earnest as a factory Yamaha rider. The American set an almost identical time to Stoner and completed a similar number of laps on his M1.

In fifth and sixth were another two Honda riders in San Carlo Honda Gresini man Marco Simoncelli, who was 0.007s behind Pedrosa, and factory rider Andrea Dovizioso as the pair assisted with the chassis work being undertaken by HRC, the former trying a new suspension.

Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Rizla Suzuki rider Álvaro Bautista registered top-eight times, and were followed in the top ten by Ducati duo Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi.

The Italian’s debut on the Desmosedici GP11 caused great excitement and he was one of the first riders on track just after midday. By the close of play the 31 year-old had completed 56 laps as he set about tackling the task of helping his new team decide between a screamer and a big bang engine for 2011 whilst also riding with a new fairing on the machine.

Other riders debuting with new teams were Randy de Puniet with Pramac Racing and Hiroshi Aoyama with San Carlo Honda Gresini, whilst Cal Crutchlow continued his adaptation to the M1 of the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team having gained a first taste in a private test in Japan at the end of October. The 25 year-old Brit had a non-consequential crash at turn six when on new tyres in the afternoon.

Back on a Ducati for the first time since 2007 was Loris Capirossi as he rode the Pramac machine used by Mika Kallio in 2010, putting in 71 laps, with Héctor Barberá making some slight adjustments to the Paginas Amarillas Aspar machine’s electronics. 2010 Moto2 World Champion Toni Elías (LCR Honda) and Valencia Moto2 race winner Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing - Ducati) also benefitted from solid lap totals.
