Team Lotus poised to change name
Mon, 12 Sep 12:30:09 2011
Team Lotus and Renault chiefs have dropped firm hints that the Lotus naming row could be resolved at the end of this year - leaving the way clear for both outfits to be renamed.
After a long fight over the use of the 'Team Lotus' name in F1, speculation is mounting that the Hingham-based outfit could be set to use a new name from 2012, with Renault adopting the Lotus moniker.
Although the matter would still need to go through official channels for the team and chassis names to be changed, the team bosses of both outfits have suggested the situation is moving forward to ensure there will only be one Lotus team in 2012.
Renault boss Eric Boullier said: "I just saw in the paddock that [Group Lotus CEO] Dany Bahar was talking nicely with [Team Lotus boss] Tony Fernandes, so I guess there is a settlement that has been done.
"We will see. Changing the name of the team/chassis can have some complications with sponsorship and obviously with TV money, so it is a matter we have to raise when we have all the elements in our hands."
Group Lotus sponsors the Renault team and has made no secret of the fact it wants to rebrand the team and rename it as soon as it can.
For Fernandes, who won the right to use the Team Lotus name after the matter went to court, he believes his outfit may be better off using one of the brands that he owns - with it possible the outfit could adopt the Caterham Team AirAsia name that its GP2 outfit has.
Speaking to AUTOSPORT, Fernandes said: "I always had a problem with 'am I really Team Lotus?' I always said that era was theirs, we were just bringing it back under new ownership. It was up to the fans whether they liked us or not.
"But there was a business behind it as well. You can't have a name and not monetise it. Effectively we are marketing someone else. I don't think this is healthy for anyone Lotus Renault, Team Lotus, whomever.
"I've always said that protecting the brand is paramount and it's not me that started all this. I didn't have a claim, they (Group Lotus) had a claim. And they lost that case. But I've always had the door open and it may be a win-win for everybody and we walk away.
"I also always said we wanted to be in the car business and I never hid that fact. And now we have Caterham."
And as well as the likely name change, Team Lotus is also set to move factories next year with it evaluating a switch to either Silverstone or the former Arrows and Super Aguri facility at Leafield.
Fernandes added: "I think the best scenario is that the cars leave for Australia next year and come back to a new home. There's no two ways about it. But Hingham will always be there, because we've got composites and we're developing a technology and engineering division."

Team Lotus extends Renault engine partnership, adds KERS
Team Lotus confirms that it will continue to be supplied with Renault engines in F1 until at least the end of 2013 - and that the new deal will include Red Bull Technology KERS systems, too
Team Lotus and Renault Sport F1 have confirmed that their existing engine deal is to be extended for a further season to the end of 2013 and the close of the V8 era, with the objective of continuing to work together when the new regulations come into force the following year.
Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology will also provide the Anglo-Malaysian outfit with KERS systems for the first time for the duration of the alliance – a development that has been welcomed by Team Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes.
“Having established an incredibly good working partnership since the first days of our agreement, we are absolutely delighted that Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology will be playing such an integral role in the ongoing development of our team until at least 2013, and then we are aiming to keep working together when the new rules are introduced,” he affirmed.
“They are both passionate, dedicated teams of people with whom we have a growing relationship that is creating a number of exciting opportunities for us for the future. They share our vision for where we want to take our team, and we are very proud to have their power pushing us forward.
“Not only will we be able to build upon everything we have learnt through working with Renault and Red Bull Technology in 2011, but we will now have the added benefit of KERS for next year, which really is a major step forward for our team. We have done the very best job we can this year, but without that extra power, we are always competing on a different level to the teams ahead, so to give our drivers that boost is a key element in helping us to catch the cars ahead – and competing with them when we do so.”
“This year, we have established solid foundations with Team Lotus,” added Jean-François Caubet, managing director of Renault Sport F1, “and this latest agreement consolidates the relationship that we look forward to continuing for many seasons to come. Renault is in F1 to display the quality of its product, so we need to be associated with teams that clearly have potential.
“The steps Team Lotus has made on and off-track with its technical structure and facilities have given us a confidence they will achieve their aims. KERS is now an essential part to a competitive performance in F1 today, and we hope this supply will help the team to continue its evolution. Furthermore, a wider experience of using the KERS system at this point in time will help in the development of the powerful energy recovery systems that will be introduced under the future engine regulations.”
“We're very happy to extend the relationship between Red Bull Technology and Team Lotus, which already utilises our gearboxes, to include KERS for 2012 onwards,” echoed Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner. “This endorses the joint venture between Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology, which will continue to develop in the coming months. Hopefully, this will enable Team Lotus to build upon the significant progress they have already made this season.” |

Iley to become Caterham Performance Director
As previously reported by GPUpdate.net, John Iley has been confirmed as a member of the soon to be named Caterham F1 Team for the 2012 season. The renowned aerodynamicist, who leaves former title winners McLaren in the move, will take up the role of Performance Director at the Norfolk squad in June of next year.
"We are absolutely delighted that John has taken up the challenge we have offered him, to help take us to the next level on and off track in one of the key areas of performance in Formula 1," said Caterham Group CEO Riad Asmat, whose outfit finished the 2011 campaign in tenth place.
"It is a real sign of our growth and development as a serious contender for long-term honours that we can attract someone of John’s calibre and we are all very excited about the contribution he will make to our future success from the moment he starts work with our team."
"John greatly contributed to the aerodynamic capability at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes but has taken the decision to accept an offer from Caterham F1 team for 2012 and beyond," added McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh. "We enjoyed working with John and wish him well for the future." |

Caterham F1 Team reveals 2012 logo
The soon to be named Caterham F1 Team has revealed its logo for the upcoming season, with the Hingham-based squad preparing to enter 2012 under a new guise.
Having first entered the sport as Lotus Racing back in 2010, the outfit became Team Lotus for the 2011 campaign before a naming row erupted with rivals Lotus Renault GP. After a long court process, it was ultimately decided that LRGP could retain its title, with Team Lotus boss Tony Fernandes opting to move away from the brand.
With the Caterham Group and all of its subsidiaries now a full part of Fernandes' F1 setup, the team will effectively be entering its third new era in as many years. |
