Atakake no Hitobito

"Atakake no Hitobito" ("The Ataka Family") is based on a novel of the same name by Nobuko Yoshiya. Kumiko Endo stars as Kuniko, the daughter of an employee of the hotel magnate Soemon Ataka. She marries Soemon's mentally-challenged son Soichi (Shige Uchida), drawn to his pure heart rather than his fortune. Soichi is looked down upon by his younger brother Joji (Takashika Kobayashi), whose business failures have eaten away at the inheritance. While Kuniko desperately tries to protect the last remaining hotel from Joji, Joji's wife (Akane Oda) finds her way into Soichi's heart.

NHK's yearlong taiga drama kicked off on Sunday, with about average audience interest. "Atsu Hime", with young actress Miyazaki Aoi (22) in the title role, drew an audience of 20.3% for its opening episode. The historical drama tells of a young girl from Kagoshima who joins the Edo Period court of the Tokugawa shogunate. Miyazaki joined about 5,000 people on Sunday for the opening of a tie-up exhibition at a trade facility in Kagoshima City.

"Atsuhime" opener, "Nodame" SP break 20%

According to data released by Video Research Ltd., the first episode of the NHK taiga drama "Atsuhime," which aired on the 6th, had viewership ratings of 20.3% (19.8% in the Kansai region). Last year's taiga drama, "Fuurinkazan," started out with ratings of 21.0% (16.2% in Kansai).
Also exceeding the 20% mark was "Nodame Cantabile Shinshun Special in Europe," the two-night continuation of last year's popular "Nodame Cantabile" drama series. The January 4 broadcast had ratings of 18.9%, which increased to 21.0% for the January 5 episode.

MIDNIGHT DORAMA
TV Asahi caters to fujoshi with new drama
Mon, January 7, 2008 (4:45pm EST)
Starting on January 19, TV Asahi will air a drama series titled "Fujoshi Deka." The lead will be played by the current Asahi Beer Image Girl, Mai Shinohara, who made her acting debut in last season's "Shigeshoshi" on TV Tokyo.
As the title indicates, Shinohara plays a police officer who is also a fujoshi (a term referring to women who are fans of stories involving male homosexual romance). She gets fired up whenever there's an incident involving a good-looking man, and she solves the cases in her own unique way.
The drama will air late on Saturday nights, in the 1:30am-2:00am time slot.
