AO Expert: Can Zverev unsettle Federer?
Mischa Zverev must commit to his strategy if he is to upset Roger Federer.

By Craig O'Shannessy | 24 January, 2017
Conviction.
Blinding, unwavering devotion to the cause. That's what is needed to serve and volley, see the passing shot fly past you, and then do it again and again.
Conviction was the raw ingredient Misha Zverev used to defeat No.1 seed Andy Murray at Australian Open 2017 two days ago. When the going got tough, he came in more. Not less. Gutsy call.
The baseline is easy. Anybody can run around chasing balls at the back of court.
Serving and volleying is aggressive. It makes people uncomfortable. It's getting up in someone else's tree and breaking all their branches.
Conviction to the cause is what Zverev will need to defeat Roger Federer on Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night. Beating Murray and Federer back-to-back is possible if you keep things simple. Focus like a laser beam on just two strategies.
Strategy 1 - Serve and Volley to the Backhand
Zverev will primarily serve and volley to Federer's backhand side. About eight out of 10 will go there, and the other two will be surprise serves to the forehand when Zverev is ahead in the point score.
If the German makes his first serve, the slicing, snarling, snaking delivery will be almost impossible for Federer to have a real crack at. Murray couldn't, and his two-handed backhand return is a benchmark in our sport.
If it's a second serve, Federer will be more at ease, more stepping forward than sideways. Return winners will still be few and far between. Federer will initially want Zverev to make contact with his volley below the height on the net, making him hit up, forcing the German to use less power to keep the ball in play.
Federer will return low and look to pass on the next shot. He will quickly evaluate Zverev’s court position, his balance, and get inside his brain and try and figure out where he will guess the pass is going.
Strategy 2 - Make Federer hit a Backhand Passing Shot.
Here's the simple philosophy. If Federer has to hit 100 backhand passing shots in the match, surely Zverev is going to win the lion's share…
The forehand passing shot is considerably easier, thanks to the extra spin you generate with the wrist. The backhand pass is naturally flatter, taking away the short, sharp cross angle.
Federer will still go cross court the majority of the time off the backhand wing, and will also look to hit some shots right at Zverev, aimed at knocking him off his feet, trying to shake his conviction.
Can Federer really be upset by a player who steadfastly employs serve and volley?
Yes. Flashback to Wimbledon 2013, when Sergiy Stakhovsky shocked Federer 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-5 7-6(5). Stakhovsky served and volleyed 100 per cent on all 109 first serves, winning 76 per cent. He served 85 per cent of those serves to Federer’s backhand return.
On second serves, Stakhovsky served and volleyed 41 per cent, and actually had a higher winning percentage serving and volleying on his second serve than staying back (69 per cent to 60 per cent).
If all Federer does in his warm-up for this match today is roll the arm over with a few serves, then hit 20 minutes of backhand returns and 20 minutes of backhand passing shots he will be just fine.
Zverev has won 66 per cent (245 of 369) of his serve and volley points and 50 per cent (151 of 303) of his baseline points so far for the tournament.
Staying back and beating Federer at Rod Laver Arena from the baseline is not a viable option. Zverev must come forward on everything. His backhand slice approach down the line to Federer’s backhand will be another key area of focus.
Zverev will get passed. A lot. It’s just part of highly successful, long forgotten, but freshly dusted off strategy.

RESULT: Vandeweghe d. Muguruza 6-4 6-0
With one hour and 23 minutes on the clock, CoCo Vandeweghe closes out one of the biggest wins of her career, downing Garbine Muguruza in ruthless fashion. The American played with nerves of steel, hitting 31 winners - 17 more than her opponent - to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final. Simply stunning. |

random comment:
There, I don't care how un-PC it is, had to be said. I've never seen either of these 2 before, I don't really care, I'm just watching this while waiting for Tsonga.
Maybe overweight is the better word?
After hearing so much hype on ESPN about her, not a single commentator mentioned the extra 15-20lb she clearly has. Her opponent Murguruza is super fit.
edit - comments saying this is misogynist are ridiculous. Its an opinion, you don't have to agree.

funniest reply (in my opinion):
She's definitely not fat; just not skinny either. The body of a healthy young woman. She is tall and muscular so she'll never look svelte, like the anorexic Ula Radwanska or the Pliskova twin chopstick pairs.
