Sisa minyak cemar pantai

Environmental damage: Action within 24 hours
08-05-2007
By SIM LEOI LEOI

PUTRAJAYA: Enforcement officers must take action within 24 hours of receiving reports of pollution and environmental damage from state assemblymen and Members of Parliament under a campaign to clean up rivers and reduce waste.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said these officers would have to act or the MPs and state assemblymen could call him personally.

"Under this campaign, elected representatives will have to map out the environmentally-sensitive areas within their constituencies and the kinds of pollution they are prone to, whether this be agricultural or industrial.

"And they will also have to act as environmental watchdogs to monitor activities in these areas and report to the DOE (Department of Environment) of any infringement.

"DOE officers can then either fine the perpetrators of such pollution on the spot, or, in severe cases, seek to bring them to court.

"We are currently finalising the Standard Operating Procedure for our officers," he told reporters after launching a publication on the implementation of the Montreal Protocol in Malaysia at Shangri-La here today.

Damansara residents fuming over noise, dust
By : Malina Jeya Palan

The construction site at the Damansara town centre is causing
concern to residents.

KUALA LUMPUR: The noise and pollution from the construction of six buildings in the Damansara town centre here is driving residents in the area up the wall.

Fuming residents have expressed fears that dust from the construction site may affect their health. They also claim that the noise was unbearable as work at the site sometimes went on until midnight.

"I am sitting for my SPM examination this year and find it hard to concentrate on my studies or to sleep as the noise is deafening," said Fatin Ahmad, 17, who was among those who turned up at a gathering near the site yesterday.

Fatin is also worried over the lack of green lungs in the area as many trees had been felled and the greenery surrounding the homes had become a thing of the past.

"The green environment is an important part of the eco-system and now that the trees have been cut down, it looks terrible."
Another resident, Dr Sam Abraham, said he was concerned about the health of those living in the area, especially children, as there would be a rise in asthma cases and other allergies if the construction work continues.

SK Bukit Damansara Parent-Teacher Association deputy chairperson Noor Azimah Rahman said the project would add to the pollution and congestion in the area.

"Our classrooms have no air-conditioning which means we have to keep the windows open. The children抯 health and safety will be affected by the dust from the construction site and the increase in traffic volume.

"As it is, we have had some near misses where some of our children were nearly knocked down despite the presence of a traffic warden at school.

"Traffic is only going to get worse," she said.

Damansara Heights houseowners association president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman urged the authorities to revoke the approval given for the project, which involved the building of two blocks each of serviced apartments, hotels and offices.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

and then everytime the kids get asthma or bronchitis or
cold or flu -- we always say -- ahhhh  memang sekarang ni
musim dia la  - semua macam selesema dan batuk --
walhal  every single month pun macam tu sebab
environment yang kotor dan tak terkawal ---
the air is just so polluted that kalau kita breath in
yang masuk bukan oxygen aje - termasuk semua dust
habuk  kuman  and all kind of sheep yang akan affect
health kita end of the day ---

tu kat damansara nun -- nak toreh lagi segala bukit gunung --
bukan saja pencemaran bunyi (tractor yang bising)
tetapi soonest akan jadi jerebu - pencemaran udara,
and then bila sungai jadi cetek sebab duk log sokmo -
jadi pencemaran air pulak --
not only dah kacau habitat wildlife --  lagi kacau kesihatan
orang ramai juga --

memang geram saya rasa dengan contractor or government yang
allowed this sort of thing to happen --

Pengusaha ikan rugi air sungai tercemar

Tangki air penuh bangkai

Berikutan itu penghuni flet terbabit mengalami masalah kualiti bekalan air, selain terpaksa menahan bau busuk akibat masalah saluran utama air kumbahan kerap tersumbat.

What is to become of the Malayan tiger?

The Malayan tiger is the national symbol of strength, courage and valour,
and has fronted the national emblem as well as the Maybank logo.

KUALA LUMPUR: They are the nation抯 symbol of strength and courage. They feature on our national coat of arms and in the logo of Maybank, the country抯 biggest bank.

But soon, we will only have images in books and on film to remind us how these magnificent animals looked.

Just before the turn of the 20th century, there were more than 100,000 tigers roaming our jungles.

Today, at the beginning of the 21st century, that number has been reduced to a mere 5,000.
And it is estimated that there are only about 500 Malayan tigers, classified as its own subspecies in 2004, left.

This number could be lower due to unreported poaching, despite the animal having totally protected status since 1976.

"Roughly one or two cases of poaching are reported every year. But the actual rate could be higher," said Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers co-ordinator Loretta Ann Soosayraj.

"Just a few years ago, six tiger skeletons were found at Bangkok Airport.

"Although they were found on a plane coming from elsewhere, authorities suspected the skeletons may have come from Malaysia.

"This is just a small part of the systematic, underground trade in endangered species."

The nation had a taste of the business of poaching when images of a bloody Sumatran tiger carcass chopped into four parts and stored in the refrigerator of a Kota Baru labourer were splashed all over the newspapers two years ago.

Ang Chun Tan, 24, caught in a raid on his home by the Wildlife and National Parks Department, was let off with a RM7,000 fine.

It was reported that he walked out of the courtroom with a big grin on his face.

A tiger can fetch between RM60,000 and RM100,000. Its meat is considered a delicacy, and its bones are thought to have healing power in various parts of Asia.

Despite the rapidly dwindling numbers, no studies have been done on the implications on the environment of the tiger抯 extinction.

"Sadly, there is a depressing under study of the implications, and this is not just where tigers are concerned," said Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia Dr Dionysius Sharma.

"When you lose a species, it sets off a chain reaction."

He said it is a helpless feeling to watch as species after species is slowly wiped off the face of the earth.

Despite this, he is optimistic about the efforts by non-governmental organisations to conserve wildlife.

"But there needs to be a bigger concern and effort for wildlife here.

"We rely on foreign documentation of these animals, and it is often not specific enough.

"We need to promote taxonomy (the science of classifying organisms) in this country.

"We are now focusing so much on biotechnology, I hope we are not forgetting about the most basic sciences," he said.

saya benar2 berharap perhilitan dan wwf kat malaysia ni lindungilah malayan tiger ni -

Caring for environs 慳 shared responsibility抂/b]

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5, but for Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk S. Sothinathan, the environment is a priority every day.

He hopes every Malaysian becomes a custodian of the environment

Q: What is the general condition of the environment in Malaysia today?

A: It is within acceptable limits. We do occasionally face incidents of pollution and human intervention, which are normal. We have enough laws. What we need is to strengthen these laws in relation to creating better awareness, building human capacity and improving enforcement.

Q: What are some of the successful programmes that the government has undertaken in the last seven years? What are some of the failed programmes?

A: The Department of Environment (DOE) has introduced a number of innovative programmes, including the establishment of water quality monitoring stations within 146 river basins.

In relation to halon and refrigerant management, Malaysia has been successful as we are well below the international limit of CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) consumption of 0.3kg per capital per year and we are also complying with the phase out programme.

I don抰 think we can say there have been failed programmes. Some programmes have not lived up to our expectations due to several factors such as manpower and financial resources.

Q: This year抯 World Environment Day focuses on climate change. Is the government prepared to address this?

A: We are taking measures. For example, we have to develop new crops which can withstand extreme drought. It is a global phenomenon, so it must be a global initiative.

Q: Polluters seem to get away. Why don抰 we see any aggressive execution of the law in such cases?

A: Legislation is sufficient in Malaysia. Recently, we reviewed the entire Environment Quality Act. The amendments are being finalised by the Attorney-General抯 Chambers.

Higher fines would be a deterrent, but I think people have to be educated. The best way is to inculcate good values in our children through the education system.

Q: Malaysia has been gaining a bad reputation internationally when it comes to environmental issues. For instance, the issue of oil palm plantations endangering the habitats of orang utans. What is the government doing to counter this?

A: Even as we speak, my minister (Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid) and the Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister (Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui) are in Europe to explain the issue of palm oil plantations endangering the habitats of orang utans. This issue arose because of a misperception by the Europeans

Need for more green laws
By ROYCE CHEAH

PUTRAJAYA: Unless more environmental laws are passed and implemented to anchor green issues such as recycling and solid waste management, preserving the environment will remain an uphill task.

Natural Resources and Environ-ment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said that, if he had his way, he would like all kinds of pro-green laws and measures to be implemented.

揃ut let's face it, even when it comes to recycling activities, they are all fragmented and not coordinated and limited to non-governmental organisations or individual companies,

environment -

Penat2 kita asing sana sini dorang amik campur balik sumer hampeh betol.
