Wenger: Arsenal Have Not Applied For A Work Permit For Arshavin

Arsene Wenger has seemingly sent out another smokescreen today when discussing the proposed move of Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St-Petersburg to Arsenal.

Reports circulating in England earlier had indicated that Arsenal had made an application for a work permit for the Russian playmaker, however, Wenger contradicted that version of events, when speaking to Sky Sports News.

Wenger was asked if the Arshavin deal was "close" and replied equivocally, with a mischeivous smile playing around the corners of his mouth.

"Close has not a lot of meaning," the Frenchman said.

"What is important is that you agree, and at the moment we have no agreement with anybody for a transfer."

As for whether the Gunners were confident of landing their player, Wenger was once again playing with a straight bat.

"We are always confident," he asserted. "We try our best and we respect our budget, and if we can find an agreement we'll do it. If we cannot, we'll still not overspend.

"When you go for a player it's because you want him."

Reports in England had earlier indicated that a work permit had been applied for and granted for the Russian star, but Wenger was at pains to contradict this story.

"We have not applied for a work permit yet for anybody. Not for Arshavin and not for anybody else."

Whether the protracted saga was affecting the relationship between Arsenal and Zenit, Wenger thought not.

"We have repsect for each other and that's it," he added.

Arshavin requires a work permit because anyone who is not a citizen of a European Union country or from a country which is not in the European Economic Area requires such a document.

Andrei Arshavin Flies To London For Arsenal Talks
Andrei Arshavin's move to Arsenal could finally be reaching a conclusion ...

Andrei Arshavin’s protracted transfer from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal looks to be finally reaching its end, after it was reported that the Russian is on his way to London for talks.

The Gunners have been chasing the 27-year-old throughout the transfer window and have reportedly had several bids for the player turned down by Zenit.

Arshavin’s wage demands also appear to have played a factor in delaying the transfer, although the Russian does appear keen to move to the Emirates.

However, Arsene Wenger’s side appear to be closing on in their man this week after Zenit admitted that a deal had been agreed and the Arsenal manager himself admitted the proposed transfer was ‘90 per cent completed’.

Yet Wenger seemed to backtrack a little yesterday confirming that his club had not applied for a work permit for the Russian, despite speculation to the contrary.

Still, the Frenchman did speak glowingly of the Zenit playmaker, explaining he would love to have him at the Emirates for his ability to beat people in the final third, something his team is missing at the moment with injuries to Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky.

Sky Sports News is now reporting that the Russian is flying from Dubai, where he has been at a training camp with Zenit, to London for talks with the Gunners, as the deal looks set to finally be concluded.

The transfer window closes on Monday evening, which means that Arsenal, Zenit and Arshavin have until then to finalise the move.

takde cesc, memang sukar cari galang gantinya.. walaupun prestasi cesc season ni macam ada on and off je tapi bila dia ada dalam team, at least confident level ok sikit, aku tak nak letak harapan tinggi kalau si Arshavin kalau masuk. terus terang season aku rasa season ni still not Arsenal season. aku cuma harap Arsenal boleh concentrate sangat dalam FA Cup. jgn duk pandang rendah pada team-team league bawah ni. at least dapat 1 cup pun dah ok. kalau takde cup gak aku rasa season depan lagi kronik.. Toure, Cesc for sure akan request pindah season depan, si Toure dah request tapi board reject.
