Ninomiya promotes New Year's cards for Japan Post
Thu, October 18, 2007 (4:31pm EDT)

Arashi member Kazunari Ninomiya has been chosen as an image character for an ad campaign by the recently privatized Japan Post. The tradition of sending out New Year's cards has been fading away in favor of e-mail, but the post office is hoping that Ninomiya can help persuade consumers to use its services. He will appear in commercials starting on the 25th.

The company also recently announced that it has teamed up with KDDI to offer a new service that lets users create New Year's cards through text messaging.

The song first appeared on the show in June. Songs usually only last for two months, but after "Oshiri Kajiri Mushi" found immense popularity, it was quickly extended until November. The most recent extension puts the song's run at a total of eight months, tied for the longest with Noppo Takami's 2005 hit "Grasshopper Monogatari."

Oricon: fall hairstyles
Thu, October 18, 2007 (7:40pm EDT)

Oricon's last hairstyle survey showed that Maki Horikita's short cut was popular for the summer. In the survey's fall edition, which was directed at high school girls, singer Kaela Kimura seized the #1 spot, bumping Horikita down to #2.

Ayumi Hamasaki and Masami Nagasawa tied for third, followed by Mika Nakashima, then YOU.

Tsuyoshi Domoto had the dubious honor of ranking 7th, in a tie with Yuri Ebihara. He wasn't the only male to be named, however - some girls also placed votes for Joe Odagiri and Kanjani8 member Shota Yasuda, among others.

The top ten list concluded with a three-way tie for 9th: Kumi Koda, Aya Ueto, and Yui Aragaki.

Fall hairstyles:

1) Kaela Kimura
2) Maki Horikita
3) Ayumi Hamasaki
3) Masami Nagasawa
5) Mika Nakashima

AAA's Nishijima to star in new Sion Sono film
Thu, October 18, 2007 (1:18am EDT)

21-year-old Takahiro Nishijima, a member of the music group AAA, has been given a starring role in Sion Sono's latest work, "Ai no Mukidashi." Nishijima has acted on stage and in a television drama, but he has never appeared in a movie before. He is also the first AAA member to star in a film.

The story is an original script by Sono. Nishijima plays Yu, a young man with a penchant for peeping. He lives with his father, a Catholic priest (Atsuro Watabe). By chance, he meets a woman named Yoko (Hikari Mitsushima) and falls in love with her, but she and her family have become involved in a new religious cult. As a result, Yu ends up in a conflict against that cult.

The role is said to be a difficult one, but Nishijima commented that he is looking forward to it as a learning experience.

Filming is set to begin this month, with a target release date in early summer 2008. Sono is aiming to take "Ai no Mukidashi" to festivals next year, including Cannes and Venice.

Shigeaki Kato to star in "Sanshiro Sugata"
Sun, October 21, 2007 (6:56pm EDT)

NEWS member Shigeaki Kato will star in a retelling of the famous story "Sanshiro Sugata," about a young judo student. Originally a novel written by Tsuneo Tomita in 1942, it spawned several film and television adaptations. The most notable one was the 1943 movie, which was Akira Kurosawa's directorial debut. The last adaptation was a 1978 series on NTV starring Hiroshi Katsuno.

The new "Sanshiro Sugata" is a two-hour drama special, set to air on TV Tokyo on December 6. Although the show will be making use of wires and CGI for the action scenes, Kato is currently undergoing special judo training for his role.

The cast includes Jun Kaname (as Sanshiro's final opponent), Noriko Nakagoshi, and Yuika Motokariya.

"Sunadokei" becomes film
Sun, October 21, 2007 (8:03pm EDT)

Hinako Ashihara's popular manga series "Sunadokei" is being turned into a movie, directed by Shinsuke Sato. It was adapted as a daytime drama on TBS this past spring, starring Megumi Sato. It averaged 6.7% ratings (peaking at 9.1%), which is high for its time slot.

"Sunadokei" focuses on the first love of An, a young girl who moves to the Shimane Prefecture with her mother after her parents divorce. Because the storyline spans fourteen years, the main roles require multiple actors. The movie stars Nao Matsu$hita as the adult An, while Kaho plays the same character during middle school and high school. Similarly, the male lead will be played by Shunya Isaka and Sosuke Ikematsu.

The movie will be shot in Shimane for a month starting on the 27th. Filming will move to Tokyo in late November and is expected to wrap up in mid-December. Toho plans to release the film in April.

"Galileo" goes to the big screen
Sun, October 21, 2007 (5:30pm EDT)

Fuji TV's new drama series "Galileo" is making its way into theaters next year, it was announced on Sunday. The series got off to a good start last week with a 24.7% viewership rating for its premiere episode, and the network hopes the movie will be one of its big hits for 2008.

"Galileo" is based on the "Tantei Galileo" novel series by popular author Keigo Higashino. Last year, Higashino won the Naoki Prize and other literary awards for "Yougisha x no Kenshin," the first full-length story in the series. That work is the basis for the movie.

The film will be directed by Hiroshi Ni#ani, one of the directors for the television series. This is his second movie - he previously helmed the 2006 "Kenchou no Hoshi" (also known by the titles "Star Reformer" and "The Star of Prefecture Government"), which starred Yuji Oda and Kou Shibasaki.

Shibasaki will also star in "Yougisha," reprising her role in "Galileo" alongside Masaharu Fukuyama. The rest of the main television cast is reportedly appearing in the film as well, including Kazuki Kitamura.

The story involves a man named Tetsuya Ishigami, a mathematical genius and high school teacher who has fallen in love with a bento vendor. When he finds out that she and her daughter committed a murder, he helps them out by constructing the perfect alibi.

Filming is scheduled to begin within the first few days of the new year. Theatrical release has been slated for the fall.

Maki Goto's brother arrested for theft
Sat, October 20, 2007 (7:26am EDT)

21-year-old Yuki Goto, a former member of EE JUMP, was arrested on Saturday on charges of theft. Also known as the younger brother of ex-Morning Musume member Maki Goto, he retired from show business in 2002.

Late at night on July 15, Goto and two friends entered a construction site in the Edogawa ward of Tokyo. They stole approximately 80 reels of metal electric cable, worth an estimated one million yen. Police rushed to the scene after a tip from an eyewitness, but the three had already escaped.

The three young men had formed a group to steal items for resale. Goto's two accomplices were later arrested, but it appears that he continued operating the group after replacing the members. Police are currently investigating his possible involvement in other crimes.

On the morning of October 20, Goto turned himself in at the Komatsugawa station in Edogawa, accompanied by a lawyer. He has already admitted to the charges in the aforementioned case.
