PETALING JAYA, July 26 — A shocking revelation has emerged in investigations into the death of baby Nawal Iris Samsudin in a hot car last week — her schoolteacher mother has left the three-year-old child unattended in the school yard on many occasions.
The Malay Mail learnt the child was often left unattended in the mother’s Perodua Myvi parked opposite the main school building for hours until she finished her classes or meetings.
Subang Jaya police chief ACP Yahaya Ramli, in confirming the findings of The Malay Mail, said statements by teachers at the school in SMK USJ4 revealed the child was often brought to the school and left alone to play in the compound.
He said teachers and other staff at the school saw the child unsupervised in scenarios such as:
● Lying in the car with the windows down
● Running around the car park
● Sitting idly on benches.
Yahaya said police had recorded statements from Nawal’s parents on Monday.
The disclosure contradicts comments by the school guards earlier this week that they had never seen the girl.
The investigation papers are ready to be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor.
On July 18, baby Nawal suffocated after being left in the car between 11am and 5.30pm.
Nawal, who was alone in the hot car with the windows up for five hours, was a mere 500 metres from where her mother Nor Zatusy Hazwa Abdul Rahim was having a meeting.
Nor Zatusy told police she was supposed to have sent Nawal to a childcare centre before going to school.
However she had forgotten about Nawal — who was sleeping in the back seat — and drove straight to school after sending Nawal’s sibling to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.
When she returned to her car at 5.30pm, she was shocked to see Nawal in the car with her face already bluish.
She was pronounced dead at a nearby clinic. A post-mortem confirmed Nawal died of heatstroke.
