Chelsea agree Juan Mata deal
Valencia have announced they had reached "an agreement in principle" with Chelsea for the sale of Juan Mata to the west London club.
The Spanish club did not disclose the fee for the 23-year-old and also added the transfer was subject to the player passing the relevant medical tests.
New Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has identified a lack of creativity in midfield as one area which requires improvement before the transfer window closes and will no doubt hope the Spain international can provide some nous to an ageing squad.
A statement on the Valencia website read: "Valencia Football Club has reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the player Juan Manuel Mata. The agreement is subject to the relevant medical tests."
Chelsea are not the only English club reported to have shown an interest in Mata with north London rivals Arsenal and Spurs linked with a player who has flourished at the Mestalla after failing to make the breakthrough at Real Madrid.
Mata joined Valencia from Madrid in 2007 and has emerged as one of their most important players, his form earning him a regular place in the Spain squad.
He was a part of the party which won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and was also a key man this summer as Spain won the Under-21 European Championship in Denmark. |

Valencia have agreed to sell Spain winger Juan Mata to Chelsea, the Spanish club said on Sunday.
"Valencia Football Club have reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea FC for the transfer of the player Juan Manuel Mata," a club statement read.
"The agreement is subject to the relevant medical tests."
The 23-year-old, also a target for Chelsea's faltering rivals Arsenal, has 11 Spain caps and has been mainstay of the Valencia side since 2008 with his speed and goals marking him out as one of Europe's most exciting widemen. |

Chelsea vs Norwich Player Ratings
New signing Juan Mata scored as Chelsea beat new boys Norwich 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, with the Canaries' keeper being sent off.
Chelsea
Henrique Hilario - 4.5
Was at fault for the Norwich goal when he came out to challenge for the ball needlessly. Needs to work in communicating with his defence.
John Terry - 6.5
The Blues captain is not as young as he used to be, not as fast as he was but his experience still showed in his play, keeping a physical Holt at bay.
Branislav Ivanovic - 5.5
Lack of communication with his keeper saw him challenging for a cross with Hilario. (Not at fault)
Ashley Cole - 6
As always, a threat when bombing forward on his overlapping runs, but was caught out sometimes.
Jose Bosingwa - 8
Scored a screamer to start the match off and made good runs to threaten the Canaries throughout the match. Was the best player for Chelsea.
John Mikel Obi - 6
A relatively quiet game for the man who re-found his father this week, but did his job defensively.
Florent Malouda (Off 68') - 5.5
Could have done a lot better in terms of passing, gave away too many passes because of his questionable decision making.
Frank Lampard - 7
Ran tirelessly to provide support going forward. Controlled the midfield battle and came out tops in most 50-50 challenges. Could have done better in the final pass though.
Ramires - 7.5
The speedy Brazilian won it for Chelsea with his run through on goal, getting Ruddy sent off. His speed was always a problem for defenders and he used it to his advantage today.
Didier Drogba (Off 71') - 6
Not as sharp as he was, and seemed a shadow of his old self. Was slow to reach some of the balls played through to him. Was knocked unconscious while challenging for a ball.
Fernando Torres (Off 83') - 3
He still seemed to be playing his own game up front, not gelled with his team. Seemed tentative in terms of passing and movement. Never really threatened on goal.
Substitutions
Juan Mata (65' on) - 7.5
Shown what he has to offer in the few minutes he was up with efficient play. Scored on his debut after capitalising on a bad pass.
Anelka (65' on) - 7.5
Excellent pass set Ramires on the run that resulted in the penalty.
Romelu Lukaku (82' on) - N/A
Showed his physical presence that was so raved about.
