Abramovich Axes 15 Chelsea Staff
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has axed 15 of Chelsea's 25 international scouts in a bid to cut down the club's massive annual expenditure.
The club has racked up debts of around £578 million which is owed to Abramovich, and he is seemingly starting to come down a notch on spending by sacking 15 Chelsea scouts, including German scout Rainer Bonhof, who was earning around £100,000 per year with the club.
To add to this small cut back, Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari has also been told by Abramovich that he will not be able to buy players in the January transfer window due to the worldwide credit crunch, and it would appear that Abramovich is trying to balance the books as Chelsea chairman Peter Kenyon said he would.
Abramovich reportedly wants the books balanced by 2010, but that target is looking increasingly unlikely, with the club recording a loss of £74m this year, and the club's total debt is thought to be around £736m.
A spokesman for Chelsea commented on the sacking of the 15 scouts by telling The Daily Mail, "We are restructuring our scouting network in order to re-focus priorities on key targets and in key territories."
Scolari understands the financial position Abramovich is in, and fully accepts the cash flow problem at the club at the moment.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Scolari said, "It's not (just) Chelsea who are not spending money. I think all the clubs in the world will not spend as much as they spent before.
"The situation in the world is different to six months ago. The players need to be thinking about this and the clubs need to be thinking about this."
The Brazilian knows that money is tight at the moment and is willing to sell players before buying new ones, commenting, "In football sometimes you don't need money to make a good change. I'm happy with the way Chelsea are thinking, which is different than before."
