Man United vs Wigan Player Ratings
Man United
Anders Lindegaard - 6.5
Given the nod ahead of David De Gea, Lindegaard had the chance to impress but failed to make it count. And that's only because Wigan failed to register any shot of note against the Danish shot stopper.
Antonio Valencia - 8
A hardworking shift for Valencia in somewhat familiar territory at right back saw him terrorise his former side throughout. His job was made easier after Sammon's sending-off when he was given the license to roam up in attack.
Deservingly grabbed a goal after he drilled in a screamer from the right of the box past Ali Al-Habsi.
Michael Carrick - 7.5
He put his ball-intercepting skills to good use at the back of the line and stuck to his task well. Carrick was man-marking Sammon so tightly even up the halfway line that the striker elbowed him and was sent off for it. The England international produced a confident performance to keep a clean sheet to add to his growing reputation.
Jonny Evans (Off 45') - 7
Stepped up and produced in a match where he was recognised center-back in the side. Was taken off at halftime due to an injury.
Patrice Evra - 7.5
The United captain answered his critics in style with several storming runs that sent Wigan's defence panicking. One such run produced Park's goal in the eighth minute to give United the early lead.
Evra was then shifted to center back in the second half and held his side comfortably.
Park Ji-sung - 7.5
Another typical industiorus outing for the Korean which paid off early after he put United ahead after eight minutes. Used the ball well and was all over the middle of the pitch, winning a penalty late in the game on a good run.
Darron Gibson - 6.5
A rare start for Gibson and he let his manager know that he can be relied upon in midfield. Did nothing wrong by playing everything simple, but wasted a few chances trying for goal from range.
Ryan Giggs (Off 63') - 7.5
Sir Alex Ferguson said that Giggs could play for another year and he showed us why. The Welshman had moments where he turned back the time, finding his teammates with backflicks and going on slaloming runs.
Nani (Off 63') - 6
A surprisingly muted outing for Nani, considering that he relishes taking on smaller sides and tormenting their defenders. A bystander at best, Nani lacked the initiative and drive against Wigan.
Javier Hernandez - 6
Hernandez finally proved that he can play the ball outside the box with a few crosses in, but he was quiet in the box when it mattered. Crowded out by Wigan after they shut up shop due to Sammon's sending-off, Hernandez had a minimal impact on the game.
Dimitar Berbatov - 8.5
The Bulgarian grabbed at the chance of a rare start and scored another hat-trick with a clinical poacher's performance. Berbatov tortured Alcaraz throughout the match and did well to create space for the midfielders to penetrate the box.
Substitutes
Ezekiel Fryers (On 45') - 7
A steady performance from the youngster at left-back in the half he played and looked ready to step up into the first team.
Wayne Rooney (On 63') - 6.5
Rooney was brought on to see the game out and he ensured United came away with a clean sheet, pulling the strings in the middle of the pitch with ease.
Federico Macheda (On 63') - 5.5
The Italian youngster was deployed in the wings but looked out of depth outside his natural position.
Wigan
Ali Al Habsi - 5.5
The Omani keeper had little chance against the five goals and did well to deny Hernandez from close range.
Ronnie Stam - 5
One of the better Wigan players offensively, but was poor defensively. Was tormented Evra and Giggs all night long.
Manuel Figueroa - 4.5
Figueroa was uncomfortable in defence and looked somewhat lost. Put in a few risky challenges and was lucky to not be penalised for it.
Antolin Alcaraz - 4
Alcaraz couldn't cope with United's attack. He looked uncomfortable going near United players and eventually gave away the penalty kick late in the game to seal a disappointing match.
Gary Caldwell - 5
Firm in the air but rather hopeless when United keep the ball low. As captain of his side, Caldwell should have done better to rally Wigan.
David Jones - 4
Jones couldn't cope with Valencia's runs and conceded too much space down the flank.
Mohamed Diame (Off 45') - 4.5
Diame couldn't quite get it right, failing to make good use of possession when going up and was overwhelmed in midfield.
James McCarthy - 4.5
The Irishman started rather steadily, constantly finding his strikers but faded away the moment Sammon was sent off.
Jordi Gomez (Off 71') - 6
Gomez was Wigan's most threatening player and actually looked like he could trouble United's makeshift defence. However, he couldn't quite get to the ball often enough.
Victor Moses (Off 80') - 4
After his mercurial performance last week against Chelsea, Moses had a quiet game against United. Disappointing, considering that his runs and trickery could have been a great source of penetration for the Latics.
Conor Sammon - 3
Poor in possession and failed to escape the attention of Michael Carrick for the 39 minutes he was on the pitch. His sending off was a tad harsh, but it didn't seem like Sammon would have contributed more even if he was on the pitch.
Substitutes
Franco Di Santo (On 45') - 5
Hardly had a sight on goal and was isolated up front most of the time.
Hugo Rodallega (On 80') - N/A
James McArthur (On 71') - N/A |

United levels up with City
27 December 2011-PA Sport
Hat-trick hero ... Berbatov and his United team-mates celebrates his third goal against Wigan (Getty)
Dimitar Berbatov smashed a hat-trick as Manchester United moved level with Manchester City at the top of the English Premier League after a 5-0 win over 10-man Wigan while its rival was held at West Bromwich Albion.
Villas-Boas: Title will be toughSchedule frustrates ManciniEvans adds to United injuries
Park Ji-sung gave the Red Devils an early lead when he converted after good work from full-back Patrice Evra.
The struggling visiting outfit saw striker Conor Sammon shown a straight red card by referee Phil Dowd for raising his arm as he backed into Michael Carrick just before the break.
United soon made its advantage count as Berbatov (40) doubled the lead, with the Bulgarian netting again just before the hour.
Winger Antonio Valencia knocked in a fourth with 15 minutes left, before Berbatov completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot (77) after Antolin Alcaraz had fouled Park.
Manchester City, meanwhile, was left frustrated at West Brom, where Mario Balotelli had an effort chalked off for offside after 33 minutes as the home side battled to a well-deserved point.
Bottom club Blackburn earned a 1-1 draw at Liverpool, where stand-in goalkeeper Mark Bunn produced an outstanding display.
Reds midfielder Charlie Adam put the ball into his own net on the stroke of half-time after a corner from Morten Gamst Pedersen to give Steve Kean's men a shock lead.
However, the home side rallied after the break, and was level through Maxi Rodriguez (53).
Despite plenty of pressure and the return of captain Steven Gerrard from a two-month absence with an ankle infection, Liverpool could not conjure a winner past inspired Rovers number two Bunn, who denied Andy Carroll again in stoppage time.
Sunderland had to be content with a point against Everton, which equalised with a controversial second-half penalty at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats looked on course to continue its revival under new boss Martin O'Neill when Jack Colback's 26th-minute effort deflected over keeper Tim Howard off Sylvain Distin to give the 22-year-old midfielder a first senior goal.
However, the visiting side was back in the game when World Cup final referee Howard Webb pointed to the spot on 51 minutes after Leon Osman tumbled in the box despite there appearing no contact, Leighton Baines smashing home the resulting penalty.
Bolton's wretched home form continued as it slumped to an eighth defeat at the Reebok Stadium, where second-half goals from Hatem Ben Arfa (68) and Demba Ba (71) gave Newcastle a first win in seven games.
In the earlier kick-off, Clint Dempsey earned Fulham a share of the spoils as the west London derby ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge to put a further dent in Chelsea's title hopes.
The American found space in the Blues penalty area to equalise just before the hour after Juan Mata had put the host in front at the start of the second half.
In the late kick-off Stoke drew 0-0 at home to Aston Villa with Emile Heskey hitting the woodwork in the first half for the visiting side and Marc Wilson heading against the bar after the break. |

Elm's agent denies Man United deal
The agent of Swedish ace Rasmus Elm has dismissed reports the midfielder is set to join Manchester United at the end of the season.
Reports in the Italian media this week claimed the 23-year-old AZ Alkmaar star was poised to make a move to Old Trafford in the summer.
But the Sweden international's agent, Patrick Moerk, insists a decision is yet to be made over his future, with Arsenal, Tottenham and a host of Serie A clubs also thought to be interested.
"I don't comment on specific rumours but suggestions he has already agreed to join a club are not correct," Moerk told Expressen.
Elm, who is contracted in Alkmaar until 2013, previously admitted to being flattered by United's alleged interest, fuelling suggestions he could join the Premier League giants.
But while Moerk says the Swede will consider any offers, he has not ruled out the midfielder seeing out his contract with Eredivisie leaders and title challengers AZ.
He added: "Rasmus does not close any doors and he listens to all offers. But he is very happy at AZ and not desperate to move to another club."
