Fresh 'New Current' Films From SE Asia

Tonight the curtain will fall over the 11th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF). Right before the screening of the closing film, the Chinese hit comedy "Crazy Stone," by Ning Hao, the awards ceremony will disclose the recipient of the 11th New Currents Award. Open to debut and second films from Asian filmmakers, PIFF's competition grants an award of $30,000. This year's contenders included 10 films, including no less than eight world premieres. They were however more geographically unvaried than usual, as all entries came from East Asia. There were no representatives of either South Asia or Iran.

The jury in charge of determining the winner is this time chaired by Academy Award-winner director Istvan Szabo from Hungary, and also features Hong Kong producer Daniel Yu, two times Cannes' Grand Prix winner Bruno Dumont from France, Iranian master filmmaker Abolfazl Jalili and domestic actress Moon So-ri.

If the five-member jury was to bestow its kudos on artistic merit only, there would be no doubt the choice would fall on the sole grand revelation of the competition, Malaysian "Love Will Conquer All." The debut feature for the 28-year-old Tan Mui Chui, who previously made herself a name on the festival circuit thanks to award-winning shorts, is a carefully observed and poignantly moody character piece centered on Aping, a young woman who has moved from the countryside to Kuala Lumpur to work in a small family restaurant.

A petty criminal declares his devotion to her, and takes her on a car trip. "Where are we headed?" she asks, increasingly concerned by the lengthy drive. "We'll just drive till the fuel is gone, till you tell me you will marry me and we抣l have children together," he replies. They end up in a village by the sea and dine in a fisherman's hub. He wins her but then mysteriously vanishes. Relying more on subtle details and body language than on explanatory dialogue, Tan抯 direction modestly leaves the protagonist抯 suffering unspoken, creating a touching intimacy with the audience. Tan's arresting filmmaking skills and superb direction of actors, exhorting remarkably realistic performances, hailing a major talent that deserves recognition.

However, if attuned to a more traditional style of filmmaking and to engrossing narratives, the jury might prefer to honor Vietnamese saga "The White Silk Dress." Tracking the fate of an utterly deprived family against the backdrop of the tormented history of the country, Huyhn Luu's debut is competent and technically more sophisticated than most Vietnamese productions, yet suffers from conventional plotting and an obtrusive score.

Other likely prize-receivers include the two Korean competitors. Park Heung-sik's "The Railroad" confidently exposes an encounter between two lonely souls, crossing paths at the terminal station of Kyongui train line, just before the DMZ. Taking its time to deliver his subdued climax, Park nevertheless displays an assured command of visual composition and emotional punctuation. Kim Tai-sik's "Driving My Mother's Wife" instead convincingly balances ironic, grotesque and surrealist ingredients in a sapid drama-comedy conveying not-so-veiled criticism of Korean macho-ism.

The duos coming from Japan and China proved less persuasive. Nakamura Mayu's "Summer of Stickleback" falls into the category of youth portraits and although well observed and sometimes intense, lacks the distinction of a personal signature. Tominaga Mai's "Wool 100%" belongs instead to the specimen of Nipponese quirkiness, mixing live action, animation and dolls play, but is unable to go any further than mere toying with cinematic techniques. The two Chinese films testified at least the spreading of regional filmmaking in mainland China, thanks to the pervasive use of digital cameras, which grants freedom from the far-fetched procedures of official approval from Beijing Film Bureau. Nonetheless, Yang Heng's "Betelnut" does not rise over stylistic and narrative contrivance in its adolescent chronicle, whereas Wei Tie's "Distance," although extremely interesting in its depiction of the exploitation of immigrants flocking from the countryside to the city, is let down by a repetitive structure and debouches on a predictable ending.

Leste Chen's "Endless Summer" from Taiwan reportedly raised considerable interest among international buyers. The film centers on a bizarre love triangle of two boys and a girl, where one of the boys is in love with his best friend, the girl is drawn to the gay guy, while the straight guy is obviously taken by the girl. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to Hashiguchi Ryosuke's "Like Grains of Sand" (1995), Chen's film sports a cooler, less demanding look than Hashiguchi抯 but lacks the troubling sincerity of the Japanese classic.

Finally, "Just Like Before" by Filipino Mike Sandejas is a self-indulgent rock movie, casting real-life band The Dawn. Although Sandejas' film has a small chance to win at PIFF, through its excellent score it certainly makes audiences willing to dig deeper into Pinoy rock.

'Love' conquers Pusan fest
Debut pic shared New Currents Award with 'Betelnut'

"Love Conquers All" by Malaysian director Tan Chui Mui emerged as the big winner of the 11th Pusan International Film Festival.

Debut pic shared the fest's $30,000 New Currents Award with Chinese director Yang Heng's "Betelnut", and also picked up the FIPRESCI Award. Part of an emerging wave of Chinese-language filmmaking from Malaysia (fellow helmers James Lee and Ho Yuhang contributed to the film as cinematographer and editor respectively), "Love" tells the story of a woman who moves to Kuala Lumpur and finds a new boyfriend, who may or may not be a pimp.

Other prizewinners included Vietnamese pic "The White Silk Dress", which took home the audience award; and Locarno selection "The Last Dining Table", which won the NETPAC Award for best Korean film.

Local major CJ Entertainment also continued its tradition of picking up five Asian films in the program for guaran-teed theatrical and DVD release in Korea. This year's "CJ Collection" selections were closing film "Crazy Stone" by Chinese director Ning Hao; "Wool 100%" from Japan; "Illusion" from the Philippines; Venice selection "Rain Dogs" by Malaysian director Ho Yuhang; and Hong Kong pic "My Mother is a Belly Dancer".

Total attendance for this year's edition added up to 162,835, which ranks as the second-lowest ever (although the 71.3% seat occupancy rate compares favorably to last year).

The event also pulled in a record 8,321 local and international guests, not including those at the Asian Film Market.

Malaysian director Chui Mui Tan's debut film "Love Will Conquer All" and Chinese director Yang Heng's "Betelnut" won the New Currents award yesterday, the top prize in the sole competition section of the 11th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF).

Only open to debut and second films by Asian filmmakers, the competition was joined this year by 10 films for an award of $30,000.

The festival's organizing committee also announced the winners of various other awards during a news conference held in the morning at the PIFF Pavilion Conference Room in Haeundae, Pusan, ahead of the closing ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Yatching Center in Haeundae.

Tan also won the FIPRESCI prize, given out by an organization of international film critics for her debut film, and South Korean director Roh Gyeong-tae's "The Last Dining Table" won the NETPAC (Network for Promotion of Asian Cinema) award. The Sunje Award, with cash prizes of 20 million won for Korean documentary filmmakers in the Wide Angle section, went to Lee Jin-woo for "The Wind Stirs" and Yoon Seong-ho for "Portfolio."

The New Currents award and some other awards were given at the closing ceremony, which was followed by the screening of "Crazy Stone" by Chinese director Ning Hao.

Overall, the festival抯 organizing committee judged that the nine-day event went over well with successful launches of new projects to begin another decade after the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary last year.

"It was the first year to prepare for the next decade, and we have achieved what we expected," Kim Dong-ho, festival director of PIFF, said yesterday at the conference.

Kim expressed his confidence especially in the inaugural Asian Film Market, the festival抯 most ambitious project.

"In three or four years, people will not need to go to other established festivals, including the American Film Market and Cannes, to buy and sell Asian films," Kim said.

The festival screened a total of 245 films from 63 countries with 64 films making their world premieres, and Kim planned to invite a similar number of movies next year, but with more world premieres.

The festival had 162,800 audience members with an average seat occupation rate of 71 percent. To cover the biggest film event in Asia, 1,577 journalists including 434 from abroad visited the nation抯 biggest port city from Oct. 12-20.

aku dah tgk tadi kat GSC 1 Utama...

p/s-this is just my opinion...

LOVE CONQUERS ALL

This is a love story. At first sight, maybe its a simple love story. About how blind a girl in love can be. Slowly but unavoidable the story will become less simple, will raise more questions without giving too many answers.

Main character - if not main victim - is Ah Peng (Coral Ong Li Whei). A common girl from Penang. She arrives in some outskirt of Kuala Lumpur to find work in the economy rice stall of her aunt. She is taken in by the family like an older daughter and shares a room with little sister Mei (Leong Jiun Jiun). In a way Mei is the main character - and certainly no victim - of her own love story with a mysterious pen pal. The indolent Ah Peng and the bright and lively Mei get along very well. Like real sisters.

Ah Peng has a boy friend in Penang. Regularly she makes her way to the public phones to make her ritual call. Fate has it that just there she attracts the attention of John (Stephen Chua Jyh Shyan). John shamelessly listens in on the conversations between Ah Peng and her boy friend and right there starts a relationship that has to be doomed. John even tells her - in the same shameless way - how to lure a girl into prostitution. But revealing this can not stop this fatal story.
