Six drown in boat capsize
Tuesday, October 20, 1998
By Hamidah Atan and A. Hafiz Yatim
MALACCA, Mon. - Six passengers drowned and nine feared missing when a boat, ferrying tourists and employees of an island resort, capsized near Pulau Besar last night. Eighteen others were rescued.
The boat, measuring 13.5 metres long and ferrying mostly staff of Pandanusa Island Resort, was heading towards the Anjung Batu jetty when it was rocked by strong waves before it split into two and sank about one kilometre off the island.
At the time of the incident at 11.35pm, the boat was believed to have been overloaded as its seating capacity was between 12 and 15. It is learnt that resort staff and tourists usually ply in boats to the mainland at night.
Sixteen of the passengers who were rescued had life-jackets on. They jumped into the sea as the boat capsized and managed to stay afloat.
Most of them were rescued by fishermen who were plying the waters together with scuba divers from the army's Special Forces Unit based in Sungai Udang, State Fire and Rescue Department and the State Marine Department.
The operation began only about 5am.
In follow-up search and rescue efforts about five hours later, divers recovered the bodies of two passengers while those of three others were found about 10.50am. The sixth body was recovered at 4.55pm.
The deceased were identified as resort employees Khainiziah Alwi, Hazimah Harun, Soraya Mohamad, Aziz Abu Hassan, 50, boatman Ahmad Mohd Noor, and his assistant, Kasim Musa.
The bodies were sent to the Malacca Hospital for post-mortem.
Those rescued were Riduan Mamat, 22; Mohamed Hashim Pit, 45; Hassan Ahmad, 49; Mohamad Abu, 45; Zaidi Zakaria, 37; Zazli Buang, 37; Azman Shah Enjah, 31; Ahmada Mohamed, 27; Abdul Malik Abdul Majid, 39; Zaleha Harun, 30; Suhaimi Sidek, 20; Nor Hisham Aziz, 19; Abdul Jalil Hashim, 23; Abu Bakar Aziz, 34; Hisham Ramli, 20; Azahar Baharin, 34; Haslinda Ali, 19; and Khairul Anuar Ali, 19.
Those reported missing were Haslinda Abdullah, Mohd Sattar Abdullah, Amran Zakariah, Zaiful Azhar Mohamad, Hafizah Mohamad Dom, Ridzuan Nordin, Ahmad Shukri Muid, Ibrahim Tambul and Nor Hisham Hashim.
The survivors, including those who had various degrees of head and body injuries, have been warded at the Malacca Hospital.
Commenting on the ongoing search and rescue operation, State police chief Datuk Arthur Edmonds said the priority of the rescue team was to locate survivors and bring them to safety.
"We have enlisted the assistance of various agencies to assist in the search and rescue operations."
A total of 115 members of the Fire and Rescue Department, Marine Police and Civil Defence Department, assisted by fishermen, are involved in the operations.
It is learnt that the operations were only mounted about 5am, although the boat owner, Addnan Hassan 49, had lodged a report at the Kandang police station about the tragedy at 2.55am.
The Anjung Batu jetty near Umbai was swamped by anxious families, relatives, friends and colleagues of the victims.
This afternoon, the divers continued the search for nine other passengers and whatever remained of the capsized boat in which the bodies of some of the passengers are believed to be trapped.
The boat, belonging to Gala Frontier Sdn Bhd and contracted to the resort to ferry its employees commuting between Pulau Besar and the mainland, had left the island for the Anjung Batu jetty with 33 passengers.
Most of them were resort employees who were returning to the mainland. The rest were tourists.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Abu Zahar Isnin and State executive councillor Datuk Ahmad Hamzah witnessed search and rescue operations from the Anjung Batu jetty about 10.30am.
Abu Zahar said a State-level committee would be set up to investigate the cause of the tragedy.
"Initial reports indicate that the boat was overloaded when it capsized. It was supposed to accommodate between 12 and 15 passengers. However, I was made to understand that 33 were allowed to board it.
"Although most of the survivors wore life-jackets, we will check whether there were enough life-jackets on board the boat," he said.
Abu Zahar said action, including revocation of operating licence, would be taken against the boat owner if found to have been negligent.
He reminded the relevant authorities to beef up checks on the use of life-jackets.
In a related development, Jasin police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Zaki Masroh said police did not rule out the possibility that 10 people might be missing.
He said police arrived at this conclusion based on information given by the resort management and family members.
"Initially, we had the names of nine people who were reported missing, but after we checked with the resort management and family members, we now have 10 names," said Mohd Zaki, adding that the latest person listed as missing was Nor Hisham Hashim.
This is the third major boating tragedy which occurred near the popular island resort in the past five years.
On Aug 15, 1993, two Singaporeans drowned when their boat sank after hitting some rocks near the island.
Nine months later, a passenger ferry collided with a boat near the island. Two passengers died and one went missing, while six others suffered head and body injuries.
