PADANG BESAR: A total of 29 illegal immigrants, including two women from Myanmar were nabbed during an attempt to enter Malaysia through a rubber estate in Chuping here yesterday.
The immigrants, aged between 17 and 52, were arrested by the state Smuggling-Prevention Unit team during a patrol at the estate area, located about 3km away from the Malaysia-Thai border fence at 9.30pm.
The unit’s commander, Deputy Superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali said the immigrants were believed to have been transported from Myanmar by human trafficking agents, assisted by their counterparts from Thailand.
“It is believed that the immigrants managed to sneak into Malaysia via the border fence in the area which was damaged by the human trafficking syndicate.
"Further inspections by our team revealed that the immigrants possessed no valid travel documents,” he said during a press conference at the unit’s office in Chuping here today.
The immigrants will be handed over to the state Immigration Department for further action under Section 6 (3) of the Immigration 1959/63 Amendment 2002 for entering Malaysia without valid travel document.
