Revealing Portraits of Beautiful Models and Their Mothers

Photographer Howard Schatz explores the origins of beauty by capturing portraits of professional models and their mothers. The Models and Mothers series has been a personal project for Schatz that spans over 12 years, showcasing women who are normally revered on camera for their physical beauty and the women who brought them into this world. The images reveal genetic similarities between the women who, in some cases, appear to be versions of one another from a different time in their lives.
More than simply presenting physical resemblances, though, the photographer was eager to observe the interaction between his related subjects, getting a glimpse into an indescribable bond between mothers and daughters. He says, “I tell the model, ‘Be your mother’s daughter…No need to be a sexy fashion model.’ They have a very hard time with that. I want them to stop smiling and stop telling the camera how it’s supposed to see them.” Throughout the collection of images, one can witness the varying relationships between the pairs. While some are affectionately wrapped up in each other's arms and holding hands, others keep a safe distance apart, as though they are merely co-workers on a photo shoot.
