Manchester City willing to listen to offers for Balotelli – report
The Italian striker has had a controversial season at the Etihad Stadium and boss Roberto Mancini has been increasingly critical of his performances in recent weeks
1 Apr 2012 09:02:00
Manchester City may be prepared to consider offers for striker Mario Balotelli, according to a report in The Telegraph.
After a series of misdemeanours and lack of discipline both on and off the pitch, it appears Roberto Mancini is running out of patience with his compatriot.
Although City are not actively seeking to sell Balotelli, club sources have confirmed they would consider a serious offer for the maverick forward, while his agent is understood to be exploring possible interest from clubs in Italy.
Mancini was highly critical of the Italian striker after their 3-3 draw with Sunderland on Saturday, despite his two goals.
“He didn’t play well,” Mancini was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
“We had only Carlos [Tevez] on the bench. I thought about this after five minutes. In the end he scored two goals, but...”
Mancini bemoaned the absence of injured Sergio Aguero, claiming that with the Argentine striker fit and in the team they would have beaten Sunderland: “I am 100 per cent sure of it and for this reason I’m disappointed. I hope we can have him for the next game.”
City travel to north London to face Arsenal on Sunday 8 April, with just six matches of the season left to play after that. |

Spray exacerbates Aguero injury
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has confirmed Sergio Aguero's mystery foot injury was exacerbated by a pain-killing spray.
The Argentina striker has been missing as title-chasing City have dropped potentially vital points in their last two Premier League matches, including Saturday's 3-3 home draw against Sunderland.
Mancini has been reluctant to discuss the problem, only referring to it as "stupid", but did appear to confirm reports that the player's skin reacted badly to a spray used to treat a knock suffered in the recent win over Chelsea.
When asked if the spray was involved, Mancini, speaking after the Sunderland match, said: "Yes."
Mancini had spent the preceding moments trying to downplay the situation and again insisted no blame was attached to the 24-goal striker over the matter.
He said: "It was not his fault, like someone wrote in the newspaper this morning."
Mancini claimed some theories published as to how the initial injury might have been caused are "not true".
What he could not deny, however, was that the 23-year-old was badly missed as City missed the chance to move back to the top of the table.
Rivals Manchester United could now pull five points clear with victory over Blackburn on Monday.
Mancini said: "We missed Aguero and for this reason I am disappointed. I hope he can recover for the next game." |

Manchester City manager Mancini: I considered subbing Balotelli after five minutes of Sunderland draw
Italian manager was angered by the performances of his strikers and left bemused by an argument between Kolarov and the 21-year-old over who should take a second-half free kick
By Husmukh Kerai
Roberto Mancini has revealed he considered bringing Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli off after just five minutes of their draw with Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.
Balotelli led City's comeback in the 3-3 draw with two goals but Mancini insisted the 21-year-old should have contributed to the game earlier and lamented Edin Dzeko's lack of impact in the match.
When asked if he considered bringing Balotelli off, Mancini told reporters: "I thought this after five minutes but in the end he scored two goals.
“He didn’t play well. In a game like this the striker should be the difference, but not in the last two minutes.
“In the first half [he should] score two or three goals, because a player like Mario, like Dzeko should score two, three goals in a game like this. In this moment we need our strikers.
"In this moment we need Carlos [Tevez], a striker who can do different. I want this."
Mancini's was further frustrated as Aleksandar Kolarov and Balotelli squared up over who should take a free kick.
The Italian forward reacted angrily as Kolarov lined up to take the set-piece with club captain Vincent Kompany forced to intervene and push Balotelli away.
The Serb eventually took the free kick and Mancini insisted he would not accept another similar event.
“They know that on the ball it should be Mario and Ale [Kolarov], after they decide who shoots. It can happen on days like this, but this is the last time,” he concluded. |

Mancini - 8 points and it's over
City boss says United could have title decided this week
By Graeme Bailey
Roberto Mancini: Says title dream could be over this week
Roberto Mancini believes that if Manchester United win their two matches this week, then the title race is over.
United face Blackburn live on Monday Night Football, before facing Queens Park Rangers on Sunday - both games live on Sky Sports.
And Mancini feels that maximum points for United, which would see them go eight points clear, would end their hopes of winning the title.
"If we go eight points behind then it is finished," said Mancini - who saw his side draw 3-3 at home to Sunderland on Saturday.
"It's clear we are disappointed. We have made some mistakes, me and the team.
"We have also been unlucky, like losing three or four key players at an important moment.
"But when you are a strong team you should be able to pass these difficult moments.
"Yet football can change in two or three games.
"I had an experience in Italy with Inter Milan when we were five points behind with five games to go yet we still went on to win the title." |

Mancini standing by Mario
Man City boss hopes striker will improve quickly
Last Updated: April 3, 2012 7:15am
Mario Balotelli: A source of frustration for Roberto Mancini but the manager will not give up on him
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has insisted he will not give up on Mario Balotelli but he hopes the striker will improve very quickly.
Mancini stated last week that he could not trust Balotelli, before criticising his fellow Italian's performance against Sunderland even when he had scored two goals.
Since then there have also been unconfirmed reports of a dressing-room argument with team-mate Yaya Toure and speculation City would be willing to consider offers for him in the summer.
However, while Balotelli remains a source of recurring frustration for Mancini, the City boss still wants to coax the best out of him.
Asked if he was prepared to give up on the former Inter Milan youngster, Mancini said: "No.
"I am frustrated because sometimes I think it is not possible that a player with his class and his technique can play a game like this.
"I think he is young and I hope for him he can improve very quickly for his future.
"A player like Mario in the Premier League should score one or two goals every game."
Bad moment
Balotelli may have struck twice in the 3-3 draw with the Black Cats but his afternoon was also noted for a row with Aleksandar Kolarov over who should take a free-kick.
"This was a bad moment," Mancini said.
"I think a professional player can't do what they did in that moment, when we were losing 3-1."
The two points dropped against Sunderland could prove costly to City in the title race but Mancini maintains that his players will not be throwing in the towel.
He said: "We should be strong, I believe always.
"The message is always the same - we will do everything to win this title."
When asked what he said to the players after Saturday's game, Mancini said: "Nothing because they were so tired.
"I said only, 'believe in yourselves' because we have seven games - 21 points. I think with 92 points we will win the title." |
