Authoritative Gerrard is Fab's man
Fabio Capello has appointed Steven Gerrard as his first England captain because he "commands authority".
The Liverpool midfielder will lead out England when the Capello era begins in earnest with Wednesday night's friendly against Switzerland at Wembley.
It is not a new role for Gerrard as he skippered England when they were beaten 2-1 in Russia and lost 3-2 at home to Croatia - results which ended their hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals.
Gerrard will retain the armband in the absence of foot-injury victim John Terry although Capello will make no permanent appointment before the opening World Cup qualifier with Andorra in September.
Capello said: "Steven Gerrard is the Liverpool captain - and Liverpool are a very important team which won the Campions League.
"He is a player who commands authority and can lead by example on the pitch and inspire the team. I think he is an important player for England and he will be the captain for this match.
"He is not going to be a permanent captain and I am not going to announce a permanent captain before the Andorran game.
"But at the moment, I believe Steven Gerrard is important for everyone, for all the players we have, because he is a player who can transmit things and, like I said, can inspire players."
Gerrard had been in strong contention to replace David Beckham as captain when he stood down after England's elimination from the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Steve McClaren eventually decided to appoint Terry who has shown himself to be a capable leader.
And in typical fashion Gerrard did not want to put his name forward to be Terry's long term successor should Capello decide a change of leadership is required.
Gerrard said: "I don't want to sit here and put my name forward to get the captaincy because I think that would be disrespectful to John Terry who is still our leader at the moment.
"He is not here for Wednesday and it will be a nice and a proud feeling to lead out Fabio's first team at Wembley.
"But Fabio says he will not make his final choice until the World Cup qualifiers and that gives all the candidates time to prove they are worthy of being captain."
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was also tipped to be in contention for the armband but Capello has opted for someone with previous experience of the post to launch his reign. |
